Artist History
There are dark clouds settling over the mountains that straddle the borders of central NY and northeastern PA. Dark heavy clouds that have brought with them a sonic storm that is called NEVER THE SUNSHINE.
The storm that is NEVER THE SUNSHINE has been brewing for over a decade. It started when guitarist Wes Kocsis and singer/drummer Matt Noldy were in 8th grade jamming in Matts garage. The duo pounded out tunes by some of their favorite artists like Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Danzig, as well as crafting their own songs. The two knew they were on to something when Matts neighbor threw the garage door open screaming, stop that fucking noise! From there the duo played with a revolving line-up of local bass players as HATEFUL DISPOSITION at Wes and Matts church dances. It was a trip playing War Pigs and Seek and Destroy at church, but it was a place to start, Wes remembers.
Another Kocsis then joined the pair when younger sister Natalie added keyboards to the bands ever-evolving sound. Noldy recalls, Pretty soon we realized it was easier to just have Natalie play bass notes on the keys. We could never find a steady bass player anyhow. The trio played local dances and arcades covering the hard rock and grunge music of the late 80s/early 90s, slipping in original songs whenever possible. During this period, the band was known as ALTER EGO.
In the fall of 1991, the bass guitar vacancy was finally filled with Sean -Freddy- Voorhees. A classmate and friend of Noldy, Voorhees was a rabid fan of heavy metal powerhouses like Iron Maiden and Slayer. Voorhees settled in quickly and a new chapter began. The quartet, still calling itself ALTER EGO, played local block parties and even an anniversary party. All the while they were solidifying an original sound that would soon send the young band into the local bar scene of NY and PA.
In 1992, TOMORROWS DREAM was born. Playing a blistering set of original music laced with Black Sabbath covers, the foursome played bars and clubs while at the tender age of 17 - well, 15 for Natalie. Within a year TD would be recognized as one of the areas top metal bands. Performing at what The Music Press termed -the metal show of the season,- TD shared the stage with Creeper (who later signed with Roadrunner Records as Shank 456) and Mind At Large (who showcased extensively for major labels under the name Five Pound Opinion) in June of 1993. The Music Press classified all the bands as -contenders for major label attention.- The Music Press, June 1993, Vol. 3. No. 6.
After the summer of 1993, TD stopped performing live so Wes, Noldy, and Voorhees could start college. However the music didnt stop. The foursome continued to craft songs and in the winter of 1993 headed to AudioArts in Vestal, NY to record their first full length CD, the 10-song, self-titled TOMORROWS DREAM CD. The TD CD was released in early 1994 receiving exceptional regional reviews and obtaining notoriety among numerous college and area radio stations, remaining on WVBRs (93.5 in Ithaca, NY) top requested chart for months.
From 1994 to 1997, the band played extensively during the summer months and college breaks focusing primarily on new material. During this period, TD played a run of successful shows at Mansfield University in Mansfield, PA and was included on the WNTE 89.5 Mansfield University Radio produced compilation entitled In the Works, released in 1995. Also in 1995, TD released a collection of songs recorded on a six-track recorder in Wes basement entitled, Purple Jesus.
While the members of TD were apart from one another, they found themselves in several side projects. Wes played in a mix of hard rock bands at Lafayette College in Easton, PA and played the London club scene with the acoustic-based group, THREE LEGGED DOG, while spending a semester abroad in 1995. Noldy, on the other hand, found himself playing Blues Traveler and Bob Marley in one of Mansfield Universitys most successful college bands, SEE WEED, from 1994 to 1995, and played in the alternative three-piece band, TRIPPING FACE, from 1995 to 1996. Meanwhile, Natalie was studying graphic design at Syracuse University and Freddy, well Freddy was doing Freddy stuff.
During this period, TDs music was going through a metamorphosis (perhaps in protest to the nice music being performed on the side). The music was getting darker and dirtier and the band changed its name to BLACK MAJIK JESUS. -As the sound changed, we looked to reflect it in our name. Our music had become very gloomy and we were down-tuned so low that it gave the music a different feel than when we started,- Noldy says. The band played several shows under this moniker and even brought out some of the religious right to protest a show at the Tazmanian Embassy in Binghamton, NY.
After completing college, Wes went on to study law and BLACK MAJIK JESUS was left idle for the time being. Though Wes and Matt continued to work on new material and played together in the classic rock bar band MYSTERY MACHINE, BLACK MAJIK JESUS live shows became all but extinct. Things took an even worse turn when Voorhees apartment caught fire and burned to the ground. -I lost everything,- Voorhees remembers, -All of my clothes, my bass, my gear. . . everything!- Thereafter, Voorhees packed his remaining belongings and journeyed west to Colorado. Natalie moved to NYC to work as the Assistant Art Director for a national magazine and Noldy found himself playing as an acoustic solo act throughout the region. In 2000, Noldy recorded his first solo CD entitled A Box Full of Blues for Second Fret Records. The band was done . . .or was it?
Fast forward a few years - Wes is a lawyer, Voorhees moved back east, and, as the saying goes, the band got back together! No time was wasted getting back into action and the bands first return to the stage was under the name BURNT ORANGE for a Halloween show sponsored by WZXR FM at Partners Bar in Williamsport, PA. From there the band crafted more new tunes, refined old tunes, and played regionally under the name NEVER THE SUNSHINE. After several shows at various North Central PA bars, NTS recorded a live demo entitled Demos From the Barn in a small studio owned by renowned jazz musician, Brian Murphy. Upon the strength of these demos, NTS hooked up with producer Jeff Dabella at Mansion Audio in Binghamton, NY, which brings the story to today. The band is working hard with DaBella who plans to shop the recordings to various major record companies. Stay tuned to the saga and follow the circle down
