Artist History
Sidewinder was born in 1988 by three outstanding individuals: Chad Winkler, guitarist, Tim Britton, vocalist, and Steve Newell, drums. Within one month of playing together, they took on a guy by the name of Adam Carroll as their bass player. The four played several parties and get-togethers for about a year. Steve and Adam soon left the band to pursue other interests. Chad and Tim continued to keep the band alive. In 1991, they took on a new drummer, Dan Studemann and bass player Marc O'Neil. Sidewinder was back on track until Dan and Mark, being college students, left the band due to academic problems approximately one year later. New replacements were immediately found. Curt Donnelly joined the band as the bass player and Chris Hanson joined the band as drummer. The four played several gigs at establishments in and around eastern and central Iowa until it was discovered that Chris had a major drug problem. The other band members found this to be a major conflict and dropped Chris immediately. Without a drummer, the band found it hard to continue, so Curt, with no mixed feelings, joined another band. Then, in March 1994, current bass player Jeff Strawman joined the band along with Bruce Anderson on drums. These crazy guys had several successful engagements at area establishments throughout 1994. Then, in late summer 1994, Bruce left the band due to an automobile accident. Bruce rejoined the band approximately six months later along with new singer, Phil Barth. Brad Carlson joined the band as rhythm guitarist in July 1995. Bruce decided to quit the band in December 1995. John Iliff joined the band as the new drummer soon after. Phil was dropped from the band and new singer Dave Lawson joined the band in May 1996. In October 1996, singer and fellow Amish dude, Josh VanderHart joined the band along with Travis Muzney. In April 1997, Jeff and Travis quit the band. Jim Wickerwrath joined the band as bass player along with current drummer The Worm. In August 1997, bass player Jeff Strawman rejoined the band. The band had some successful (and some unsuccessful) gigs for the next year, until in August 1998, Josh decided to advance in his career and had to leave the band. Ex-frontman, Phil Barth rejoined the band and picked up where he left off. In early November 1998, the band felt that Phil wasn't going in the musical direction that they wanted to go in, so Phil was released from his duties. After a couple auditions, Becca Shappell was hired to assume the job as lead singer. It looked as if a new chapter had been written for Sidewinder once Becca joined and overcoming Becca's stage fright was something that the band needed to overcome, but one day short of a gig, Becca decided she needed out. There was a gig the next day and Sidewinder needed the best for a replacement. The Worm had a buddy, Evil Stalker Horné, who was the best Bret Michaels impersonator we could find to take over the lead singer role. Needing to take the band forward into the next millenium, Farmer Rob Burr was hired in November 1999 as the new second guitarist. His lead guitar abilities make him a huge asset to the band. |
