Press Reviews
"Evan Tate's Post Bop saxophone has enough Free Jazz in it to please the downtown NYC set while it stays grounded in tradition of the untraditional." - Michael Ansaldo"Manhattan-born alto/soprano saxophonist Evan Tate currently resides in Germany, which may explain his low profile. He's a strong player, capable of holding his own in stripped-down acoustic trio settings. His writing makes smart use of odd-time rhythms, and there's a tight logic to his group's forceful but never totally free interplay. Additionally, he's made some unusually convincing efforts in the oft ill-fated "Harmolodic Free-Funk" field; the Ornette Coleman/Prime Time influence is clearly evident in his electric band's slap bass- and backbeat-driven attack, but the improvisations don't have that sometimes overwhelming feeling of constantly scrambling near-chaos. With only a few recordings out, it will be interesting to see what steps he takes in the future." - Will York (Listen.com) |
