Artist History
The year: 1996. The place: The Quadrant Bookmart and Coffehouse, Easton
, PA. A young Bill Fricke and Carlos Valente sit down for the first time
to put their collective musical maunderings down on paper. The fruit of
their efforts, "The Case of the Blond Bonanza", is written, played, and
soon discarded.
As the years passed Bill's voice grew stronger and Carlos's licks got
hotter. The introduction of a second guitar player (Mike Barfly), who
also sported a lovely singing voice, led to more complicated musical
arrangements and smooth vocal harmonies that sparked the fire that is now
known to throngs of fans as "the Shaderock". Through Mike the boys met
Kooshee (formerly known as Thomas Stetson Cushing). Koosh, a rather tall
drink of water, was encouraged to lend his musical genius to the band as
well as his bass guitar and choirboy voice. One or two drummers later
(the position is now permanently seated by Danny Bradlau) and Shade began
rocking in full force.
Whether billed with punk, hardcore, jambands, or blues, the onstage
presence and tongue-in-cheek humor of the band is enough to turn heads
and win listeners. Add their signature two, three, and four part
harmonies that would make Freddie Mercury jump out of his grave and
dance, and you have fans. Throw in guitar harmonies and riffs that
bounce around your head for days at a time and you have addicts.
The pursuit of higher education soon brought Shade to the spotlight of
New Brunswick, NJ. In recent years Shade has become the unofficial band
of Rutgers University, from college events, to frat parties, to 'battle
of the bands' victories. Bolstered by a campus of fans that drown out
vocals by singing along to their favorite cuts, Shade has recently
expanded its horizons to the music scenes of NYC and Philadelphia. To
quote their fans, it wont be long before the whole nation realizes "Its
all about the Shaderock". |
