Chasing Hades is a ROCK band from central PA. Formed in January of 2001, they became determined to save ROCK from the pre-fabricated corporaphelia (bad music) that is infiltrating the ROCK kingdom. They are succeeding. Press Reviews
From the Reading Eagle; January 2002: No gimmicks, no apologies from Chasing Hades The local band that thrives on straight-forward, basic rock will celebrate the release of its new CD, “Spacehead,” with a performance Saturday night at Hiester's. By Jim Speese Eagle/Times Correspondent Yet another local CD release is being celebrated this weekend at Hiester's Lounge. There's nothing special about the band Chasing Hades. That is, no gimmicks about what they do pop into mind when one thinks about this Reading-area band. No particular musical genre jumps to mind either. And certainly, the band offers little in the way of ground-breaking new ideas on the new CD “Spacehead.” Another thing they don't offer is apologies. That is, if you're looking for gimmicks, for something new, the next big thing, props or some sort of false-memory angst in a desperate attempt to connect with an audience, well, don't look to Chasing Hades. They're proud of this conformity to your basic rock band that makes them, ironically enough, somewhat unique. What they do well is rock. And that's not such a bad thing, after all. Chasing Hades is John Adams (not the former president, probably) on vocals, Jeff Pepple on bass, Nort on drums and backing vocals and Jason Basom on guitar and backing vocals. They all hail from the Reading area. What brought them together? Well, a love of rock. All of the members played in a host of other bands, from heavy metal outfits to hardcore bands. When the opportunity came to combine their talents into a band that was sort of an amalgamation of all they'd done before and was none of all those things as well they couldn't resist. The combination works pretty well, for the most part. There are a few stumbles on this debut CD, but in the main it's a fairly convincing slab of rock that touches on lots of genres. Guitar riffs are the main ingredient that drive the songs, and they act as the hooks that grab the listener. The guitar intro to the appropriately titled “Driven” is an apt example. It pulls the listener in with its cool, quiet menace. Basom then switches to overarching power chords before breaking down again later in the song. It's all about dynamics to Chasing Hades. Adams' vocals dive from screams to croaks with relish. He curses a bit. He seems angry at times. But it all works well. He, on the first listen, might drive away a listener. But his voice rewards repeated listens and is more subtle than it first seems. Indeed, part of its subtlety lies in the ease in which the listener is fooled. Adams is the archetypal front man for a hard rock outfit. The rhythm section, not surprisingly, pushes the whole thing forward, suitably evocative when appropriate and rocking when rocking is called for. “Spacehead” was recorded at Akdar Studios and produced by the band and impresario Frank Phobia. It's a good, clean recording for the most part, and plays to the band's strengths. As they might say themselves, what's wrong with a good, old-fashioned (well, not really old-fashioned, since this genre experienced its own renaissance in the '90s) guitar-driven rock band? Indeed, while this band reminded me of many others, the one that kept popping up in my mind was Nirvana. Chasing Hades has that same sense of guitar riffs and a couldn't-care-less sense of melody. It's all good.
