Artist History thebeforepicture. is an unlikely mix of folks from the plains of the Midwest and the swamps of the South, coming together in Portland, Oregon to play their version of angular and dissident post-punk songs of guilt, regret and sorrow. Originaly from New Orleans, Kevin Callais (Guitar/Vocals) moved to Raleigh, NC in the mid 90's. There, he played in the bands Swain and Kim. He moved to Portland in '96 and played with various musicians until meeting Matt Svaglic (Guitar/Vocals) in October 2001. Originaly from Kansas City, Missouri, Matt moved to Portland in 1999 after completing college. The two wrote songs and played together, attempting to form bands with other musicians, via the classified ads. The two had minimal luck until they stumbled accross a classified ad that caught their eyes. An ad placed by a drummer, new to Portland, gave the two guitarists hope. After a few phone calls and attempted meetings, Jeremy Judy (Drums/Vocals) met up with the two. A transplant from Chicago, Illinois, Jeremy played in the bands Adhesive, The Super Eighteen and Filiment. The three connected immediately and now the search was on for a Bass player; once again turning to the classified ads. After a discouraging stint with a handfull of Bass players, the three turned their sights to an obvious source, friend, Tina Barkley. Tina (Bass/Vocals), also from Chicago, completed the sound they were looking for. After months of writing and playing, thebeforepicture. was formed. June 26th 2002 marked the first live show for thebeforepicture. and they haven't slowed down since. Drawing influence from bands, such as, Jawbox, Shiner, Cursive, Shudder To Think, Sonic Youth, and June Of '44, to name a few, thebeforepicture. continues to craft it's aggressive, multi-faceted sound, becoming a colorful square peg in a "round hole" scene.
