Press Reviews
Based in the British Columbian city of Coquitlam, Remnant began in mid-2001 with the vision of bringing together young worship musicians in the Vancouver area desirous of bringing glory to God and of creating a project revealing their innate gifting and heart expressions. While numerous are Remnant's support members, the core of the group consists of Craig Bateman, Mike Friesen and Ben Gadd, who individually composed most of the 14 songs on offer here (6 from Craig alone), each also sharing on lead vocals.
Many of these new songs come in energetic pop-rock style, with singable melodies and totally God-focused lyrics (as they themselves say, 'our vision is fairly simple, we enjoy and depend on God in our everyday lives and the songs simply reflect this truth'). Standouts among these are the opening rouser, two punchy numbers from Friesen - the latter with a semi-thrash thrust! - and Gadd's delightfully edgy 'Lord You deserve'. About half the album, though, comes in mellower worship flow, most memorable to my ears being the catchy title-track - with effective bass, mandolin and trombone sounds! - the wonderful, adorational 'Song about goodness' (both these tunes sensitively led by female vocalists) and the gorgeous acoustic purity of 'You alone' and 'Lord of light'. Also included are excellent cuts of well-known Paul Baloche and David Ruis songs - both given thoughtful, unhurried treatment.
Fine backing vocals (often in tender harmony) work well on many tracks, as does hand percussion and Friesen's cello on those gentler tunes. There's certainly no doubting the varied gifting of these musicians, some of them having led worship in diverse settings for years, with both Craig and Mike already being members of other local Christian bands! No doubting either the accessibility of nearly every tune - making them highly adaptable for use in individual / home group / congregational settings. Great songs, well executed by dedicated worshippers who realise they are part of God's Remnant - set aside by Him and surrounded by His favour as with a shield. Holy Vine is worth checking out!-----

The Remnant Gathering 'HolyVine' CD contains a diverse blend of rock, blues, with
a touch of folk. The project flows together nicely for so many musical
influences. They pull it off really well and I must mention the various
guitar work on this album is also very noteworthy. The production and overall
songwriting is strong and I for one look forward to what this band has
to offer to us in the future. Songs I have selected for airplay are: Track
3 I Cling To You, Track 7 Lord You Deserve, and Track 12 Holy Holy Holy.
This is a band to keep your eyes on. For more info please check out their
