The biography of
The Grilled Lincolns
By Lenny Cakestra
The Grilled Lincolns were born on Salisbury University’s campus in the fall of 2001. Their current line up features Rob Dubois on drums, Mike Bakke on bass, and Riddie Becker on guitar and microphone. Riddie and Rob met at Salisbury University when they were both freshman in spring 2000. Rob introduced Mike Bakke, his friend and ex-band mate from high school, to Riddie right around that time. Within a year he had moved in with Riddie and Rob. The band practiced a lot and did a couple of gigs in Salisbury, MD and in the January 2002 they borrowed some recording equipment and made their first CD, “Go Ahead and Burn It” in their basement. Their homebrewed album has an original feel to it with no two songs alike.
All three of the Grilled L’s are seasoned musicians even though they are all only 21 years of age. Riddie Becker is a classically trained blues guitar player. He honed his skills under Baltimore’s Heavily respected Carl Filipiak, starting lessons when he was just 11. By 12, he was sitting in on guitar with some world-renowned musicians, including drummer Dennis Chambers, bassist Gary Grainger, and the Samples. He also was written up by Baltimore’s music monthly at the same age. Robbie Dubois is a professionally trained classic/R&B/Broadway singer and has sung in gospel choirs, R&B groups, college ensembles and rock bands. He is currently playing his fifth different instrument in the band. He taught himself how to play the guitar, bass guitar, drums and piano. Rob and is also a popular hip-hop DJ and MC. Mike Bakke, also a respected MC, is a self-taught guitar player who switched to bass once joining the band. An uncanny songwriter, Mike has penned over 50 songs on both guitar and bass and continues to write both songs for the band as well as some solo numbers. Even though all three could front a band playing exclusively their own material, the three good friends have decided to put egos aside and work toward a sound that could only be created by their three minds working together. In other words, none of them have a problem sharing the spotlight.
With numerous originals and a number of quirky covers (including Sublime’s “Garden Grove,” N.O.R.E.’s “Nothing,” Martin Sexton’s “Glory Bound,” and N.E.R.D.’s “Lap Dance,”) the band continues to have an enthusiastic live following. All being excellent improv musicians, their sets have sometimes been finished with an invitation to any vocalists in the crowd to join them on stage for a impromptu rap jam. They have played numerous house and fraternity parties at SU as well as headlining Washington College’s Swampfest two years in a row, playing at Salisbury University’s Field Day two years in a row and winning SU’s 2001 battle of the bands. They have also shared bills with the likes of the Derek Trucks Band, The Roots, Kelly Bell Band, The Pharcyde, The All Mighty Senators, Jimis Chicken Shack, Wakefield, Tenderloin, Virginia Coalition, The Written Prisms, and Tribe of Ben. The G-linx are quickly building a strong fan base as well as a stronger work ethic. With their minds set on getting their music heard the band looks forward for any opportunity to get out on stage and do what they do best - rock the house.
