Artist History
The Climb are a melodic rock band from Exeter with a female vocalist. They formed in March 2001 and have become increasingly popular in the South West.
Within several months of forming The Climb made their tv debut playing live on ITVs The Base presented by Radio One dj Emma B. A video of their performance was then streamed at www.2bdiscovered.com gaining them international recognition. To date they have played almost 100 live gigs at various pubs, clubs and outdoor festivals with a headline spot at Tedstock rock festival on Jubilee day 2002. Unlike many bands based in the South West, The Climb have not limited themselves to gigs in their immediate area, but have travelled as far afield as Wolverhampton, Glastonbury, Derby, Bournemouth, Andover, and London (The Underworld and Dublin Castle). In 2002 they represented the South West at a heat of MGD Undiscovered with a gig at the impressive Millennium Stadium complex in Cardiff.
The group have supported a number of high profile bands including Crackout, Jetplane Landing, Antihero, Sufferkiss, and NME favourites The Datsuns. They have featured in the local press on numerous occasions and have been interviewed by several local radio stations, including GWRs Gemini FM stations, BBC Radio Devon, and Exeter University station Xpression FM. The Climbs music has also been featured on several national student stations, and various internet radio stations including Alternative Devon and Olympic Radio. Recently they have been working with local labels SKH Records and Rocketkid Records, and are about to release their first studio recording on Breakout Records, with funding from Exeter Arts Council.
They are currently holding talks with two new channel 4 music programmes. They have 3 videos showcased regularly at www.3btv.com and even Accentcentral tv in America have asked to show their videos! The band are now currently seeking management and a record deal. |

The Climb - Review
Songwriter Andrea advised me to turn the CD up loud when I first listened to it. So I did. First point of impact: Andrea’s beautiful voice, for very beautiful it is indeed. Second point of impact: It’s music. It’s most definitely Exeter spawned – but get this: it isn’t punk. Hallelujah!
From their stated influences (My Vitriol through to the standard Nirvana mention) I can pick up elements on occasion, but in general – if you like your rock contradictory and twisted, but with a hint more mellowness, femininity and harmony – The Climb are a great original band.
I first sent the CD spinning about ten minutes after waking on the morning of its arrival. I can honestly say it was a refreshing and altogether appreciated alternative to my usual smattering of wake-up tunage, but it wasn’t until track four – ‘In Chains’ – kicked in that my eyes flew open and I was taken in. It’s catchy in an obscure way, but on a higher (or lower) level, it has such a blend of depth and melody. I love it. From there on I was alert. I wasn’t going to let them slip a classic summer tune like that past me again when they thought I wasn’t paying attention, ohhhhh no. Consequently, I am rewarded straight away with a fantastic song entitled ‘Days Like These’ which I spend the next ten minutes humming in the shower.
As the eight-track progressives, it improves on the mind-stick scale and the compliment-o-metre explodes. After being warned several times that the recorded material does no justice whatsoever to their live performance, I’m intrigued to know more about this band, if they impress such as this with a supposedly dodgy CD.
To conclude, The Climb are the perfect answer to the Exeter Indie-kids prayers, and you can catch them live soon at The London Inn, Braunton (Sat 5 Oct), and The Farmers Arms, Taunton (Fri 25 Oct). |
