Artist History
Reny has been writing poetry and performing since the mid 80's and playing fingerstyle guitar since about 93'. He has spent a good portion of his life traveling, living in Denmark and in Germany for a while during the later half of the 80's as a sponsored skateboarder and rap artist. Some of his early credits include remixes for among others Vanessa Williams (Vanessas' vibe mix/the Comfort Zone-rap) and Inner Circle [Bad Boys remix-rap], performing at festivals such as Roskilde Denmark, and opening for a Tribe Called Quest, Ice Cube and Gangstarr to mention a few.
~~~
Reny started teaching himself to play guitar In the early 90's and began exploring American roots and blues music. He was instantly captivated by the complex syncapations of delta and piedmont blues, and soon found himself singing & Writing almost exclusively in the early blues tradition, and to great contentment it would seem. But the fact of the matter is the love of music, all music, would eventually lead him and his neurotic muse to still more sources of inspiration, from bluegrass to jazz, latin and African music, back to blues finding links between them all at every turn. He was eventually inspired to blur the lines that seperated his tastes in the past and realize the dream of making a memorable musical and lyrical contribution........and ofcourse getting the money the booze and the women crossed his mind too.
"Recently Bell and have established a pressence on the world wide web, and have been busy recording and performing their special genre defying mix of roots music and urban poetic reflections every chance they get. The new Medicine Show band has givin' Renys' tunes a new sense of possibilities, aswell as the extra groove that was needed to bring the vibes to the masses.
"Grasping at Straws" is a very captivating piece of music. The intro of the song is alluring like burning stars in the night sky or a stroll through a meadow with your lover in the springtime. The foot stomping the six-string acoustic with it's sliding feel. The old folk roots of the sweet insightful 60's come to light. The acoustic guitar plays the same notes repeatedly but this isn't boring. The vocals fill in the outline. Reny and Bell sound great together. Jason "Reny" Renard is the main voice in this song. The vocals are rough and dirty not unlike a rock singer’s voice. There is so much personality and character in his voice you could listen to him sing all day long. The mood this tune sets is reminiscent of the stories we all heard about hate ashberry. Back in the good Old days of true American folk. Singers with something to say, a war to stop a world to save. The Grateful Dead in their earliest of blues roots. Janis Joplin Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Marry the list goes on, and now Reny and Bell will be added to that list. At least for this reviewer. This is a writer with a message, a singer with a voice, a song with a story worth hearing. The song maintains all of the necessities to make this a wonderful work of art. It is Interesting, Captivating, Alluring Intriguing, Enthralling and thoughtful.
Review of Roots Reality:
I dig the smooth jazz-blues feel
I think the vocals are smooth. Reminecent of Spearhead. Also very original style. I think the arrangement is challenging, witty, and very creative. I like this tune and I especialy like the guitar a lot. good luck in the future!
