Artist History
Jagger’s approach to Rock and Roll is one of raw emotion, embracing the essentials of Pop, Rhythm and Blues, and Roots Rock performed from the gut with a “Garage” attitude. Although the four members of Jagger all share the same Grass Roots principles, they hail from various backgrounds and musical influences.
Jagger was literally conceived in a garage in the home of guitarist and vocalist Dave Drapen, a Washington D.C. native who at the age of 18 established himself as one of the hottest DC guitar players in the rock band Ice 9. After playing a gig in NYC at CBGB's, he decided to stay in Manhattan and a year later began playing guitar and writing with RCA recording artist Pierce Turner and the Legendary Buddy Erkin. After 7 years as a songwriter and performer in NYC, Dave was offered a publishing deal in Nashville; so he packed up his bags and moved to Tennessee. He spent 3 years there writing and performing as a singer/songwriter in the Bluebird Caf Circuit. Tired of the formulaic Nashville scene, Dave decided to go back to his Rock Roots and headed for Austin where he once again picked up his electric guitar and formed the now defunct band The Jimmies.
It was in the “Musician’s Haven” of his South Austin neighborhood that Dave met Erik Larson. After a couple of years of hanging out and jamming, the two made a commitment to take their camaraderie and musical compatibility to the next level, leaving behind all other projects to focus on their new project Jagger.
Guitarist and vocalist Erik Larson blasted out of El Paso, Texas with his band The Colors (after intense technical/theory guitar study with renounced guitarist Dan Lambert), hit Austin, and reformed as "Johnny Law". Johnny Law was signed to Warner/Metal Blade and quickly put out and album produced by Brendan O'Brian (Black Crowes, Pearl Jam). The album charted in England and features two songs on the Freddy's Dead Nightmare on Elm Street VI Movie Soundtrack.
Drummer John "Salty" Salmon, an East Texas native had previously been with Drapen’s former band The Jimmies. John the youngest member of Jagger attended Southwestern State University where he studied music and music theory. He left college to play on a professional level with the popular and highly acclaimed Asylum Street Spankers. After a couple of years of touring the US and Europe, he decided to expand his horizons and began exploring other musical genres, playing with numerous Country, Jazz, and Rock and Roll bands such as The Jazz Pharaohs, Richardson Seeds, and DC-9.
Bassist Shane Walker, a Pensicola, Florida native rounds off the Jagger’s rhythm section. In Florida, Shane played with Fig and Galvayney’s Groove. After touring the Southeast he found his way to Raleigh/Durham where he co-founded Scooter, a band which received extensive air play on New York rock radio. While on the road again through the Southwest, Shane settled in Austin and has since played in several projects such as Mannequin Wrestlers, Buzzfuel, the De Jarnet Band and Drama Queen before becoming a viable member of Jagger.
These four musicians comes from the “old school” philosophy of Rock with a conviction in the belief that once the costumes, props, and trends are stripped away from the music, it’s the diversity, passion, and raw talent that will be remembered in the end.
