Artist History
Ben Scott believes musicians are like cattle. They like to roam wherever they please, whether it be stylistically or lyrically. Meanwhile, it’s the critics who put up the fences. Ben Scott has been making music since he picked up a guitar 10 years ago. And although he tries, he can’t really classify his music, opting instead to let his songs do the talking.
“I guess it’s got strands of folk and rock and a little pop,” Scott said. “And, of course, there’s a little country in there because of where I’m from.”
The 25-year-old musician was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he was weaned on the sounds of George Strait and Willie Nelson. Scott played bars and clubs in Oklahoma City, mixing a few originals into his diverse mix of covers. Aside from playing monthly at the Oklahoma Opry theater in Oklahoma City, where he won Male Vocalist of the Year in 2000, Scott played in renowned venues in Texas and Oklahoma, including the Johnnie High Opry in Grapevine, Texas.
In 2001, Scott moved to Nashville to pursue songwriting. And with the move, his style and focus changed. Scott’s songwriting now reflects all of his influences, including musicians like John Mayer, Dave Matthews and Paul Simon.
“Living in Nashville and being around such great songwriters helped me learn how to better craft a song,” Scott said. “I now have a stronger grasp of tying a melody in with an original batch of lyrics.”
While in Nashville, Scott piqued the interest of Music City publishers. He also batted around ideas and melodies with some of Nashville’s preeminent tunesmiths at open mike nights and songwriter rounds.
Scott has since relocated to Boulder, Colorado. He continues to play his unique brand of acoustically driven music, powered by his commanding voice.
