Artist History
How did this band get started? It all came together in Chicago, when two Ohioians, Eric and Steve, met up with numerous other musicians, eventually evolving into the six piece band today that incorporates funk, hip-hop and rock, playing all over the country.
Eric N. Yoder is the founder of Horse-Drawn Productions, a crazy little studio putting out everything from rap to metal to pop, working with the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Skee-Lo & Keith Sweat. This is where everything happens, with Eric guiding every step of production. I have loved watching this band evolve from a concept, to a few songs, to a professional-level cd and live show that just keep getting better.
Eric contributes his talents to the funk as the bass player and vocalist, and his stage presence deserves its own bio. (Check out the picture pages for the multitude of hair colors, jewelry and footwear.) It’s all pretty amusing when you consider his dad was raised Amish.
Steve “Vinnie” Schnall is just the giggin-est guy you ever saw. His resume is ridiculously long (and impressive) and I will forever be jealous of his ability to earn a living playing music. He’s been all over the planet doing this, but a substantial portion of his energy is devoted to the Urban Funk Ordinance, where he plays keyboards, sax, flute and he sings.
DJ E, is the funny man of the group. Put this guy behind a turntable and give him a microphone, and you won’t be disappointed. He really should give lessons (or at least write a book) for kids just starting our who want to have both the technical knowledge and the energy on stage required to DJ for a funk band.
Joe Williams is the best thing to come along yet. He is the tenth drummer for the band, and I’m pretty sure he holds the title for “Drummer with the Most Shows”. After they found this guy, they quit shopping around. His background in gospel, R&B and jazz, and his influence has greatly improved the percussion section.
Stephanie Wells arrived in the summer of 2002. She was a sub at first, but with the backing of the band at large, she stuck. Steph is hot, she’s smart, and she adds this incredibly appealing feminine energy in addition to vocals and keys.
…and then there is Mike. Mike W. is the newest member of the band, replacing the last guitar player with style and skill that even the uninitiated can immediately appreciate.
Together they make up the Urban Funk Ordinance, otherwise known as a good time. I have probably been to 100 of their shows, but I still always get up and shake my ass.
