Artist History
The Crayon Theatrical combines Michael Homyk's love of dreamy psychedelia and pop music with his poetic lyrics, self produced home-recordings, and a fiercely independent DIY ethos. For seven years Homyk fronted a succession of bands in the Dayton, Ohio area before giving up live performance in favor of crafting home-recorded studio albums. Since Homyk began to use the name Crayon Theatrical in January of 1996 he has released several EPs on cassette. He continues to receive press and radio airplay from around the world with his latest self-titled six-song CD. He is currently writing new material for a polished (but, of course, still home-recorded) full length release.

Press Reviews
"The Crayon Theatrical is the project of Michael Homyk and is a strange blend of Pixies-like songwriting and studio work, yet somehow the work comes off sounding like some of the Who's late-'70s work, a' la "Behind Blue Eyes." Unfortunately though, the quality of this recording is substandard and a bit amateurish. Those who can look beyond that, though, as some audiophiles can't seem to do at times, will find a very rewarding and revelatory recording. One of the things that's really interesting about Michael Homyk's The Crayon Theatrical is that it actually sounds like the lost tapes of some long-forgotten '60s San Francisco Bay-Area ensemble who fell out the scene before they had their day in the sun, except for some of the timbres on this recording that are definitely from the '90s. All and all, though, this is a good recording reminding one simultaneously of the Pixies, the Who, Phish, and Strawberry Alarm Clock, which is statement unto itself. Interesting despite its shortcomings. -- Matt Borghi

"Songwriter, musician-engineer Michael Homyk is the creative force behind the Crayon Theatrical. The name he has chosen for this project is apt in that the six songs displayed here are indeed very colorful and somewhat dramatic in scope. Homyk experiments with an array of studio and instrumental effects and the results are unique and clever reflections of his own apparent personality. A truly noteworthy new and fresh voice emerging in rock and pop today." -- Eric Harabadian

"At times dreamy and at times riddled with modern rock psychedelia, the Crayon Theatrical is the work of Michael Homyk. His astute knack for finding the right poetry to fit with the right sound is what makes this 6-song EP work. Recorded and engineered in his own home studio, The Crayon Theatrical is no stranger to a DIY ethic and goes boldly further with a lo-fi approach that makes you associate the smell of melted Crayons." -- J-Sin
