    Artist History
Voltaire, or Francois-Marie Arouet was born in 1694 during the reign of King Louis XIV. Voltaire was raised in a middle class family, yet the majority of French citizens were subject to grating poverty brought on by Louis’ reign which was gradually rendering France helpless with monstrous war debts and territories too large for the monarchy to control. The social and economic stratification was becoming more and more defined as corruption in the aristocracy began to run rampant. Louis had just completed his palace at Versaille when Voltaire came into the world. Voltaire was given a proper education at the Jesuit school of Louis le Grand. Even as a student at Louis le Grand, Voltaire began to illustrate his wit and intelligence and constantly annoyed and even infuriated his teachers (Ward 1). This seems to be foreshadowing towards his eventual attack and satire of the religious world in France and of the Jesuits themselves in Cadide. Voltaire worked as a secretary for the French Ambassador to Holland for a short time, but soon left the job to become a writer (Ward 1). His short-lived career among the semi-aristocratic gave Voltaire the connections and audience he needed to unleash his opinions upon the nobility. Voltaire soon received a reputation throughout the upper-class in France for his writing because it was not only intelligent and witty, but because it attacked the very people whom it was available to. Voltaire used his pen to many extremes. When he was in trouble, he used it to flatter his benefactors to his own usages. When he was safe again, he used it to attack and humiliate his enemies and those he hated: the gentry, the corrupt religious figures, and the King himself.
