Artist History
Vancouver-based quartet, 40 Foot Fall, began its existence in the summer of 2002, when lifelong friends Colin Reid (vocals, lead guitar) and Dean Labonte (guitar) decided to start a band. Both had been involved in other projects that prevented a previous collaboration, but the wait was well worth it! In search of a drummer and bass player, Dean recruited Chris Warunki (drums) whom he knew from previous collaborations. Chris put his band, Omnisight, on hold indefinitely to focus on 40 Foot Fall. Brandon Cherrington, who worked with Chris on an instrumental project, was then chosen to play bass, thus completing the band.
Their name is taken from a near fatal accident of Colin’s. In 2002 he was rock climbing when a piece of equiptment failed he plummeted approximately 40 feet to a rock ledge below. He shattered his foot and severely bruised his back and pelvis, not to mention having to repel down for the trip to the hospital. Despite his injuries, Colin did not miss a single rehersal and attended on crutches ! But it was Chris who had the foresight to use the accident as inspiration for a band name, and so 40 Foot Fall was born.
Their music has a searching quality to it and is characterized by a mix of strong melodic hooks and heavy riffs. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of music including classic rock, pop, psychadelia, grunge and metal. Artists such as Jeff Buckley, Soundgarden, Big Wreck, The Police, Alice In Chains and The Doors have been mentioned when it comes down to addressing their sound.
40 Foot Fall has recently recorded at Trebas and The Factory Studios. They have also been playing successful live shows, building a strong fan base and getting positive feedback from fans and fellow musicians as well. Events such as Livewire Palooza, Band Fest and New Music West are next on their ever-expanding agenda. 40 Foot Fall is poised to be a strong presence in the burgeoning Vancouver music scene.
