Artist History
After building a strong reputation as a powerful legit. vocalist in New York's Cabaret circuit with her roots in Jazz standards, Lead singer-Naomi Kukoff decided to test her considerable vocal skills in the Pop genre. In 1998 she paired up with long time friend Jason Moscartolo, ex-guitarist of Boston based band Mystery Jones (now Two Ton Shoe) and began collaborating on original material. The musical chemistry was evident and the two began a prolific songwriting relationship that is the cornerstone of Umbrella's sound. During the creation of the new sound and material Naomi met pianist Jon Smith and Bassist Dave Ambrosio while performing in a Johnny Mercer review. With the addition of Smith and Ambrosio the organic feel of upright bass and piano would keep some of the Jazz tradition intact in the new sound. Smith then directed Naomi to guitarist Marc Ciprut who added the special sauce to the mix and the sound was almost complete. During a recording session they met drummer Tobias Ralph just off his tour with Duncan Sheik and now the unit really became whole. After recently finishing their first album and building a strong following in New York, the band is looking at an upcoming tour before the new year. |
