Press Reviews
HM MAGAZINE - The boys from Dallas are back with another album, this one an improvement. Comparisons of the band will fit more closely with Pantera rather than Tool, due to the speed of the material and the heavy, crunchy grooves. The BGV's remind me of Vanishing Lessons era Tourniquet, and the vocals of Seth Poor aren't too far away from Luke Easter during his non scowling moments, like the softer choruses. Songs that stand out include the heavy first track, "Kindness," and the humorous "Looking Christian" SCREAMS OF ABEL MAGAZINE - "Mold" is the definitive sophomore album from the band who received favorite independent band of 1997 in HM magazine (A prominent Christian music magazine for all you people who solely read SOA for your hard music pleasure) and plenty other decent reviews elsewhere for their debut album "Degrees of Freedom". "Mold" is superior to "D.o.F." in every aspect. "D.o.F." suffered somewhat by poor production and occasionally flat sounding guitars but this is no longer the case. Eloi have retained their bass sound and of course Seth's trademark vocals. The biggest difference, though, is the improved distortion on the guitars, now it really kicks! One listen to thefirst song and you'll know what I mean. Throughout this disc there seems to be twotypes of songwriting, instantly accessible all out thrashers e.g. "Kindness", "LookingChristian" and "Pharisaic", with every other song being more creative and melodice.g. "Room to Breathe", "Mexico" and "Mold". This is good as some of the songskeep you hooked while the other tunes grow on you (kind of like well.. mold). This keeps the listener from becoming bored too soon and gives the album longevity. Eloi sounds tighter now too with guitarist Bryan Hillard focusing more on solid rhythms than leads. I found Jeff Gothard's drumming just mesmerizing, most people judge how good a drummer is by how fast he/she is, but there's more to it than that. Jeff really shines in the tune "Mexico", being just plain catchy incorporating lots of variety withgreat use of the high hat, ride etc. There's plenty of tricks that really add to the songs like the whining guitar riff in the background of the song "Pharisaic" that helps to create the illusion of being chased or the "loose guitar cord" outro in the song "Mexico". Another cool effect is the guitar trade-offs in the middle of track 6 "Looking Christian". If you liked Eloi's last album then you'll love "Mold" and if you didn't, well, try them again for the first time. Who knows it might grow on you kind of like... mold. |
