Artist History
Originally from Pennsylvania, Spicer moved to Los Angeles with the intention of becoming a film director. Although the visual medium inspired her, she craved a more independent way to express herself, and disappeared after an Oscar nomination to try songwriting. She now creates music that has been called cinematic by the critics, and has won her both fans and awards.(National Academy of Songwriters). Like an Engine is Spicer1s self-produced debut album, and is an ecletic, powerful mix of sensual, husky phrases with a rare element in recorded music- open space. The production is sparse, with an edge not too far away. Her songs are intimate and visual: too moody to be defined as folk, too lyrical to simply be called rock. It1s some kind of strange potion, but one that's perfect for that midnight ride with the windows down. And the dichotomy of light and dark, small town wonder with Los Angeles bite, is the map running over the melodies here. There is a storytelling melancholy in her songs, along with a playful, sly humor. Combine this with the passion of rock and roll and the quiet of a plaintive piano: you have a truly original artist. And though she might be best known for her more poetic works, her live shows are really where she shines. You get to see all the ties that bind unwind and break free there on stage. After finishing "Almost Broken", she'll banter with the band and drift into funny, homespun stories or her left-of -center ditties. Case in point- her ode to Jo jo- the philosophical traitor who tries to crash the local Elks club meeting by gluing antlers on his head. As the audience joins to sing hi ho for Jo jo, you get the idea that Amilia's take on the world is indeed original. Her melodies, whether light or dark, take you somewhere, paint you pictures, tell you stories. |

Press Reviews
Sing Out! Magazine: "Startlingly good, this is an impressive debut and deserves to be heard.Coast Weekly: There's something about Spicer'sdelivery that's reminiscent of a French chanteuse in a smoky, candle-lit cafe...in it's own quiet way, it refuses to be played as background music. Spicer's lyrics are worth hearing as poetry, sometimes painful, sometimes playful."Applause Magazine: "I heard one of those voices that cause you to just stop and ask, Who's that! I'm a Leonard Cohen fan, dark and dramatic, and I heard some of him in her music."Soundtrack credits- Wrote, peformed and produced two songs for Roger Corman's Macon County Jail. From her debut Cd: "Shine Like You" for HBO's Extramarital. Come Over Me, Million Years, and Like an Engine in the feature film, Footsteps. |
