Artist History
Originating in Naperville, IL, in the summer of 2000, Ocean is a four-piece band consisting of vocals, drums, bass, and guitar. The members include four lifetime friends, two of which are brothers. Guitarist Chris Jalowiec and drummer Eric Andersen share eight years of playing music together, also being two of the only lovers of solid rock music in their area as they were growing up. Much of their tight sound comes from four years playing with friend and bassist John Sutton in a local Chicago land rock band. Loren Andersen, Eric's younger brother, stepped into the front position in 2000. This finally situated the desire for a captivating, moving vocalist Chris and Eric had longed for. Nine years of trumpet playing helped develop his large, full vocal support, making him the perfect front man for Chris and Eric's driving sound. After fumbling through several bassists, never feeling content with what they found, the three band mates finalized their search with bassist Eric Fornelli, whose studio experience, and diverse musical abilities brought the band the tightness they needed. Unfortunately, Fornelli's presence was short lived, for when the band moved north to Appleton in the winter of 2001, he could not travel with them. He attempted to maintain his place in the band, traveling for gigs and practices, but finally resigned in the summer of 2001, but, this did not stop them. Ocean played acoustic sets and wrote many new songs that summer and fall and that is when the band took a slight turn. In spite of this loss, Ocean remained focused and with determination like never before.
Ocean turned to open mic shows in Appleton during the increasing cold of the fall an on into winter. It was in mid January of 2002 at a weekly Tuesday night open mic show, held at "Big Belly's" in Appleton, that Ocean was presented with the missing piece to their potential 4 sided jigsaw puzzle. Lucas Gargo, a seasoned bassist, from the recently separated Steven's Point band, "Star Hustler," was swimming in the sound of music filling the room as well as the pint of New Castle before him, when he noticed something promising in the 3 piece group before him. After the show he introduced himself and presented his phone number, and the rest became history in the making.
