    Artist description
"Melodic alternative pop rock"... that's the best I can do. There are usually vocal harmonies, interesting musical additions like off-the-beaten-path chord progressions, and I use things like distortion and general volume much more carefully and purposefully than many rock musicians. Other than that, I don't know, just listen to the songs.
    Music Style
Anything that was going through my head at the time
    Musical Influences
I have a myriad of influences from all styles; my favorite bands are Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five, Silverchair, and Alice in Chains

I draw from hundreds of influences when I write, but in the end I think my songs end up coming out with their own original sound
    Artist History
I was born in 1984 to two very musical parents. By the time I was four, I was taking piano lessons (I trained classically for 10 years and then took jazz lessons for one year). When I was in the first or second grade, my parents tried to get my brother to play cello, but he hated it. I was curious about it, so I convinced them to let me take lessons on that too, and that sort of became my main instrument (I am at Berklee School of Music right now with cello as my principle instrument). I was fairly sheltered in terms of popular music because of my selectively conservative parents and because I went to a private school for grades 1-8, but when I was about 13, my dad started buying me Christian rock albums (I think he wanted me to know about the existence of rock and pop more than I did... for the first couple weeks he had to choose which ones to buy and make me listen to them in the car or wherever). I immediately fell in love with the group Jars of Clay, and to this day they are one of my favorites and a huge influence, especially on the way I look at vocals and harmonies. Very soon, however, I outgrew most of Christian rock, the vast majority of which, especially then, was either really lame or a ripoff of a more popular mainstream group. I started listening to the radio and buying mainstream rock CDs, practices which my parents censored heavily at first but eventually gave up on because they realized how much I loved the music. Around the time I was 14, I started writing songs, originally with Christian lyrics (I had much more faith in Christianity then than I do now). Even now, after developing through 5 or 6 bands and countless solo songs, religious and spiritual theme remain a large part of my lyrics.
