The day I ever listened to, let alone review, a country album. Granted this isn’t country in a strict sense, but it is mighty close. Actually, this EP put out in 2002 by Charlie Greer (also of Darting Oxcart), is probably best to be described as singer/songwriter country. That way, it’s not apt to scare you all off. Because this is a sweet listen. Really. Charlie Greer knows this is some hokey country, check out the title tracks and the lyrics, and he doesn’t care. So before you may be inclined to condemn him to country hell, listen to the lyrics in ‘Banger’s and Hash’, a song about a boy whose parents are serving up ‘banger’s and hash’ as they are ‘poor white trash’. This is a cool fun EP. ‘Six pack and a toothbrush’, how much more direct can you get? A song about a man having troubles with his woman and thinking of heading out with his six-pack and his toothbrush. Classic. Throughout all Charlie’s songs there are some really neat little effects going on, introductions of sounds not associated with country. That’s because Charlie Greer has put together a fun album. ‘Will You Be Able’ is a good singer/songwriter tune, a nice slowcore melody. A lot less country and a lot more pop sensibility combined with nice acoustic work and good lyrics. Recorded on a 700mhz E-Machine with a 13 dollar Radio Shack mic and some mixing software (liner notes) – Charlie has made a successful garage country album with pop influences, which doesn’t sound nearly as bad as you may think. Anyways, you have nothing to lose by checking out Charlie Greer at mp3.com. And while you’re there, check out his more rock oriented project ‘Darting Oxcart’. Recommended if you like Johnny Cash, Elliot Smith, Tindersticks.
