Artist description
Sifting through the music collections of Nick P,
you’d rediscover some of the greatest music from
the last four decades. It’s hard to imagine that
an artist could mesh so many influences into one
distinct sound. Yet, P has mixed the rock from
the 70’s, the flare of the 80’s, and the edge of
today’s music into a fresh, new sound that he
likes to call Plain-Clothes Glam Rock. Since the
release of his self-produced independent album,
My Favorite Clich in December of 2000, P has
been playing solo shows to promote and sell it.
He says that everyone who owns a copy of it loves
it. “It’s amazing that something recorded in a
closet could turn out so well.” P shows are full
of energy. Nick is infamous for leg kicks a la
David Lee Roth and Axl Rose-like mic dances.
Born Nicholas Peay (pronounced “Pay”), P’s guitar
skills are entirely self-taught, and after five
years of music theory training, he also taught
himself the piano and bass. “I scream like Adam
Sandler as well, or so I’m told anyway.” He’s led
bands in two different cities, during which he
developed his song writing craft. P’s recent
songs, both musically and lyrically, have become
wittier and more distinctively his own.
“I Dream in Lime,” written November 2001, is
essentially about strange dreams. The clever
lyrics and catchy hooks make reference to Billy
Joel, Greenday, and Superman. “Carolina Sofa,”
written in March 2002, is what P calls his rock
anthem. “When my mom listened to it, she said it
sounded like something Aerosmith would have done
in the 70’s, which is exactly what I wanted the
song to sound like.” P is currently recording
his new songs for the album Occupational Therapy
that he hopes to release sometime in 2003. |
