Artist History
Kriipis Tulo emerged in the beginning of 2001, on the ruins of semi-mainstream trip-hop trio Spinners, which in turn was an offspring of a melancholic wing of Yaputhma Sound System, highly influential post-everything experimental group (1995-'97). Peak of activities of this studio project falls within spring/summer of 2001, when a few vocal tracks sung by female singer Kristi were recorded in a small professional studio in Riga.
Until then, experiments with female vocals never resided in the work of Kirill Vesnik (aka Teknisk, oLo oLo, and formerly known as Bongo in times of Yaputhma Sound System and his solo projects Ayahuasca and Ambiophonic/Ambifunk), whose concept exceeds the limits of standard ideas about sound and structure of melodic-rhythmical formulas, and rather resembles a meteor of sonic installation space…
In the early Spring of 2001, Vladimir Leibgam, a professional photographer and designer, who periodically resumes his musical activities, asked Kirill Vesnik to audition an Estonian girl named Kristi Alvare. So the first (and so far the only) joint track, Ocean, was born (released under the name Kirill Vesnik on v/a "kratzputz konzentrat", kolka ka1 cd 2001).
Currently Vladimir (aka Sever) works on a full-length album to be exclusively released on Kolka in the Fall of 2002. But let's get back to the history of Kriipis Tulo.
Later on, when Vladimir got tightly involved in his work for design company, Kirill offered his old friend, J. Pitch, to experiment together. So a few other spontaneous studio sessions with Kristi were recorded. After that the guys buried themselves in knobs, buttons, CDs and reel tapes of Ambiophonic studio until the end of Summer 2001. So far Kriipis Tulo has given 2 live performances, one at Jazz Giants party (Riga, September 2001) and at the opening of trendy boutique/gallery/vinyl shop/microlounge MA1Z3 (Riga, January 2002).
Living in such country as Latvia, it's hard to count on more or less extensive live dates, fast public recognition and mass-media acknowledgement of anything that doesn't fit the standards of local pop scene, drown in imitations of cheap Russian pop-music.
In the beginning of 2002 Kriipis Tulo completed an EP entitled Ujuja, an Estonian for swimming. The feeling of soaking in warm and soft water of a swimming pool, where two young people, a boy and a girl meet each other, runs through all 7 tracks of Ujuja. Sympathizing each other at first, they fall in love and enjoy each other, staying together. And everything happens here in the swimming pool, where unceasing murmur of the water runs through the romanticism and tenderness of Hommikune Ujuja track and happy-go-lucky time carelessly spent beside soda pop machine in Paevane Ujuja. Full of limitless erotic fantasies, soft sliding of Black Silk from the girl's shoulders… And complete dissolution in the water and each other - Oone Ujuja… A video for this track is in the work by our partners - rigasound.org.

VITAL WEEKLY
============
number 337
------------
week 35
Behind Kriipis Tulo is guy called Teknisk and J. Pitch - hey what's
in so many names anyway but who knows, these are regular names in
Riga? It seems to me that these boys listened closely to the work of
those who released their work on Chain Reaction. Sizzling and
crackling beats that don't seem to match very well, but which after a
while get groovy and funky. Kinda like good ol' Vladislav Delay
music. Although it may not be their intention, I don't think Kriipis
Tulo would win a recording deal with Chain Reaction however. Their
music doesn't shed a new light on what has already been said in this
music. But, as said, that might not be their intention anyway. If
not, then they have quite a nice, yet not radical new, release out
there, with some nice laidback, dubby ambient inspired techno.
