Artist History
Sturgis Nikides has had a long and varied career as a guitarist, composer, engineer and producer. He began playing the guitar shortly after seeing the Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965, which he described as an "earth shattering, life changing" event, and made his first public appearance as a professional musician in 1969, at the tender age of 11. By the mid 1970's, at the age of 17, he was lauded as one of the best guitarists in NYC's burgeoning underground music explosion; playing lead guitar in the legendary band, Neon Leon . In 1979 he joined forces with John Cale (co-founder, with Lou Reed, of the Velvet Underground)and made his indy recorded debut on the(Spy/IRS Records)single, "Mercenaries(Ready for War)", and his major label debut in 1980, with the album "Honi Soit"(A&M). Constant recording and touring followed in the ensuing years, until 1987, when Sturgis relocated to Miami for a long overdue rest, and a new career direction : composition and production, which continues to this day. Recently, he's returned to NYC and his first love, playing the Blues. Sturgis is approaching these new songs with real excitement. Especially after acquiring a pair of National Steel guitars, and devoting 12 hours a day to composing and recording. The results, as you can hear, are well worth the sweat... |
