Artist History
Spiva had his first brush with popularity in the Road Carnival Records release of "The Avalon" (top 100 college bands of '91) from his hometown of Walla Walla Washigton. After a short lived journey helping pioneer the Seattle grunge scene, and an almost signing with Sub Pop Records (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney), a plan foiled by an Avalon member who's dedication to religion found him leaving the band for a mission, JC turned his intertests to jazz. During this time he fine-tuned his drumming style to become the diverse player he is today. With drums as his main instrument, he also plays guitars, digeridoos, Berimbau, sings and is a gifted pianist. After meeting guitarist Sean Radford in 94, JC started focusing on yet another genre: Ambient. His obsession with electronic music led to his first radio show at the Whitman College radio station KWCW, where he took advantage of promoting himself and sean on his hit local ambient/eclectic show "Astral Screams". In 96 he moved to Germany where he was the first ever american drummer to place 2nd in Deutchlands annual professional music contest with his band 'Typhoid Mary'. This group spawned the beginnings of his later group, Mourninwood, where he met respected Monastary guitarist Walter Harvey. Together with rapper Ignacio Rubio, with very little time to practice due to endless military deployments, they managed to write and recorded their self titled debut in jan 01. They later sold three songs to the UPN-WWF pro Wrestling network for national airing. During his time in europe, JC fell in love with the dutch culture, spending most weekends in Holland or at home in W. Germany completely indulged in their well known electronic music scenes. Also during this time Spiva became very fond of turkish, egyptian, indian, bellydance, middle eastern and dulcimer music. But things really took a turn when he attended the worlds largest rave, the Berlin Love Parade. In Berlin, he discovered that the minimalistic simplicity of electronic music, mixed with his cultural studies abroad, was what he wanted to do; whether chill-out or thrash-core. "That simplicity has been the backbone of my composing for the last two years. My techno career is based on what I learned in Europe, and the response is fantastic" Spiva recently said. For two years, under the name COITUS, he made an impact in Germany, Luxembourg and Holland, writing samples for some of the areas known techno dj's, while learning and experimenting with his then-beginner software. After five years in germany working as a tv news anchor and radio show host for the USAF, JC returned home to finish his degree at the University Of Oregon. He studies and practices very hard to be the best musician he can be, and has an incredible ear for sound. He's performed at venues around the world. His non-music hobbies are cooking, working out, fishing, biking, concerts, traveling, thrift stores, college football, reading, politics, wine tasting, photography, ice hockey, video editing, web surfing, throwing crazy ass parties in eugene, family and friends. |
