Artist History
Nicknamed “Sky” after talkin’ big then wipin’ hard on a snowboarding jump, this “angelic vixen” is an energetic, if chaotic addition to the music world.
A native Detroiter, Skye grew up with an innate love of the performing arts. “I remember standing in the middle of an aisle at Kmart singing songs for the customers, choreography and all. People gave me strange and amusing looks, but even then, I didn’t care.” She was five, and the performing bug had bit. At the age of seven, she began playing cello, and by thirteen was performing legitimately on stage.
At home, music was all around. Her Mother was a band and choir teacher, and taught piano lessons out of their home to help make ends meet. “Our house was always filled with music. Tchaikovsky from my Mom; Prince, Madonna, Depeche Mode, and The Cure from me.”
After realizing there were no job opportunities for singers in the Detroit Classifieds, Skye moved to the East Village in New York, where she sang for tips at a coffee house.
Influenced by sexy female rockers like Gwen Stefani, Shirley Manson, Pink and Madonna, Skye relocated to Los Angeles. She was immediately asked to be in a girl-group, “Triptych.” But, the group disbanded shortly thereafter. She then fronted a co-ed Pop/R&B group, “Back To Back,” which received a lot of major label attention. Although offers for the group never solidified, offers for Skye as a solo artist did.
“Pieces of Skye” is a five-song mastered CD written by Skye and Paul Bushnell. “The first time Paul and I met, we immediately started writing a song in his living room. It was awesome. We just clicked right away.” Paul, being the accomplished and funky-assed bass player (Ja Rule, Shakira, Elton John, BBMak, New Radicals, Joe Cocker, Sinead O’Connor, Edna Swap, The Commitments) that he is, had just the vibe that Skye was looking for. Together they infused her strong, sexy vocals and lyrics with pop, funk, punk, and rock, resulting in vibey, danceable grooves with grit.
