Artist History With his debut album 'Ready to Fall' and his list of performances stretching the limits of South Dakota and beyond, Nathan Payant is hardly Ready to Fall as the title of his first album suggests. He is simply on the rise and ready to take chances in life! Nathan has found himself swept up in changes of life, music, and love in the past year…exactly what he bases his narrative-like songs about. It is hard to believe that it was just last August when the then twenty-one year old acoustic singer/songwriter headed to Mitchell, South Dakota to audition for Chad Sharp, the founder and President of C-Sharp Productions. Though Sharp was not anticipating finding a new artist to add to the label that he began himself, he was incredibly impressed with Nathan’s talent. Sharp explains, 'The first time you meet Nathan and hear his songs, you instantly connect.' Nathan’s lyrics and musical skill have 'connected' to many as he performs across South Dakota while working on his first record. From Aberdeen (where Nathan is finishing his music education degree and theatre minor at Northern State University) to his hometown of Redfield, South Dakota, to larger locations such as Sioux Falls, Nathan’s music has attracted fans of all ages. Many believe his ability to capture life moments and experiences and set them to music makes him appear older and wiser than his twenty-two years. Labelmate, Christina Bulatao confirms, 'He is really something special. It is like he is an old soul in a young body. His songs and performances are amazing.' Music has always had a strong presence in the Payant family. In fact, one of the songs on his first CD (Since I Found You) features lyrics written by his father, Jeff. His mother, Pat, is the supportive force behind his fan club and finances! Nathan also has three sisters, one brother, two nieces, and one nephew that cheer his every move. Nathan has always had a strong desire to pursue and expand upon his music abilities. In high school he was very active in the Redfield choir and bands. He found himself starting to perform at a local coffee shop, 'Simply Charming.' Now, continuing his studies at NSU, Nathan has participated in nearly all of the musical ensembles and has extended his talents into the theatre department. He has played a major role in many of the recent plays and musicals performed at the collegiate and community level. The combination of collegiate music/theatre activities, touring coffee shops, playing at festivals, and other community functions has allowed him to explore all of his possibilities. Some of Nathan’s influences include James Taylor, Dave Matthews, Ben Harper, David Gray, John Mayer, Ari Hest, Matt Patrick and many other independent artists discovered on the Internet. He has had the privilege of being in the company of Ari Hest (New York), Pegtop (Minneapolis), and Long Since Forgotten (New York) in various venues. As he looks forward to continuing to visit different places and meet new people through spreading his music, Nathan also prepares to graduate in December, apply for graduate school pursuing a degree in vocal performance, and get married next August…oh…and write a few more songs along the way! He has already started working on new songs for a second album, in which he hopes to add a full band. Nathan continues to appreciate all of the support he receives from his loyal fans across the state and the rest of the country. He hopes that his debut CD, Ready to Fall, is just the beginning of his musical career. He is currently on a “mini tour” to support his debut album. Check out his schedule for any shows near you.
