Artist description
Katie Isenberg is a San Francisco-based songwriter with a riff-driven approach to the acoustic guitar and a literate approach to lyrics. Trained as a classical violinist, Katie took up guitar in 1994, exploring the example of the Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, and other female songwriters who favored sparse, well-crafted songs and acoustic performance. In recent years, Katie's influences have also included artists such as Patty Larkin and John Mayer, particularly for their virtuosic guitar skills and their pop take on the folk song.
After earning an English degree in 1997, Katie joined longtime friend and fellow Bay Area native Rupa Marya (acoustic guitar, vocals, mandolin, and percussion) to form Vice Versa, an acoustic duo with a yin-yang aesthetic in arrangement and performance. The delight the two friends take in playing together has reached audiences on both coasts; in 1998 the duo took first place in a songwriters' showcase at Eddie's Attic, Atlanta's mecca for acoustic music. After releasing their CD "Album" in 1999, Vice Versa spent several years performing in Washington, D.C., sharing the stage with artists such as Michelle Malone and Deanna Bogart (at the Barns of Wolf Trap). Recently, Katie and Rupa returned to the Bay Area, where they perform together and as solo artists.
