Artist History
Without Johnny formed in November 2001. But before this...Martin (guitar) , Ben ( guitar) and GB (drums) were in a band, when Johnny, their singer, decided to quit just after 150 CDs of the band had been manufactured. This was slightly annoying, and there are still 145 CDs available priced at 4 of your english in a box in Mart's room, or so we think. Mart,Ben and GB went underground and hid in the music department after Johnny's departure. Eventually Dave, merged into their lives and after a Big-Band Tour of Poland his place in the as yet unamed band was secured .
Jim had a birthday party in November 2001, down in The Crypt, a popular destination for drunken parties and dodgy geezas. The band had no bassist, but Jim came to the rescue getting a mate called Simon down. After 10 minutes of practice in Mart's bedroom, the band played at the party to a wave of hysterics, acclamation and drunken ranting. Considering the band had met Simon the day before, and never ever gigged with him, the gig fitted like a dancer in a leotard.
Simon was asked whether he'd like to practice with the band after the gig, and agreed with the idea. Which proved to be a pretty neat decision.
Without Johnny then went on to enter the Lancashire Evening Post Battle of the Bands and won through two rounds to reach the final finishing third overall (with some blaming the defeat on poor sound engineering). But the competition provided the band with new fans and also recording time with which they recorded their first self-titled album at The Cutting Rooms Studios in Manchester (used by the Doves for some of their recent album 'The Last Broadcast'). Since the Battle, the band have been writing new material, attending Glastonbury and gigging (including a support slot for Ooberman on their pre-Glastonbury warm up tour).
Without Johnny were named in December 2001, not as a sexual innuendo, but because of Johnny's walk out months before. We do not premoted unsafe sex, and do not wish people to think we do. You can't describe the sound of the Without Johnnies, i don't think anyone has successfully done so yet. There are so many influences and styles in the music each song is unique. It's dirty but pure. We like to call it Maths-Rock, because of the use of time signatures to further the experience and the formulaic qualities the songs possess.

Press Reviews
"Without Johnny are without peer to win semi-final" "Without Johnny blew away the opposition to cruise through to the grand finals of the Lancashire Evening Post Battle of the Bands. Judges and the audience had no doubt about the group's unique set - it's blend of jazz-edged rock leaving the crowd begging for more. COnfident in their performance and unafraid to be different, Without Johnny opened proceedings last night and were always going to be a tough act to follow." Lancashire Evening Post, April 12th, 2002.
"First up were the relatively unknown Without Johnny, a five-piece from Lancaster complete with a solo saxophonist. Despite being together for only a short period of time, Without Johnny gave a cultured performance, and it was evident as the set went on that the band was comprised of five very able musicians. The band also displayed a vast array of influences and variety within their set, with "Messiam" a highlight of the set. They also displayed something that too many bands do not: diversity within the tunes. It was perhaps no surprise that the mighty Without Johnny progressed to the next stage." GLASSWERK
"A weird band. This is a very good thing. It is difficult to define the style of this band which made their sound new and fresh. Technically very good and really good use of time signatures and new structures. The songs were epic, yet jazzy and sometimes quite hefty and dark. There was good versitility between guitarists which made for a thicker sound. All instruments had their own place including quite experimental vocals. Altogether a fantastic set and an awesome band. You have to see them to see what I mean so catch them in the semi’s" JUDGE Nathan @ BATTLE OF BANDS
