"Owen, you've got to tell me: How does a guy coming from an orchestra/jazz band background in Philadelphia end up in the electronic genre? You must have really torqued some people off along the way with an attitude like that! (Does Pennsylvania governor and former Philadelphia mayor Ed Rendell know about this?) My experience has been that those people who have worked in a corporate music setting (which is basically what you've got in larger ensembles like orchestras) have a natural ability when it comes to arranging instruments from an electronic palette. It's an interaction thing and a role/responsibility thing. Each one of those orchestral components is a piece of a larger puzzle, and as long as each element is faithful in staying with what it does best, you end up with beautiful music. But since people have self-determination, what you dream of in your mind is very rarely executed by an orchestra. Ask any conductor - he'll tell you that the end product is usually a mile away from the original conception, unless the orchestra members are very, very disciplined. That's why Frank Zappa eventually gave up. The guy put together SUPERSTAR lineups to perform the music he wrote, but he was never satisfied with the resulting recording because everything was subject to the interpretation of the individual band members. In the end, Frank bought himself a $100,000 instrument called the Synclavier, and basically did everything himself so that it would turn out the way he planned it in the beginning! Too bad he died shortly thereafter - FZ was just getting rolling! Owen has obviously been enjoying the control he's got over his "orchestra" in the creation of his electronic music. It's spirited stuff, and he works his themes to the fullest. My only disappointment upon listening to the MADE IN TAIWAN artist page was the use of FADEOUTS! Come on, Owen - you're an orchestra guy! OK, they do work better in the electronic genre, but what would the conductor say? Good luck getting the low brass section to do a fade out, huh!? OK, so you do it because you CAN - that's part of the allure of having total control over all of the instruments - no compromises. Keep up the good work!
