Artist History
An 84 year-old Grandma proudly stood in the sunny courtyard at the health fair in Spanish Town, singing songs from her childhood. She and fellow Jamaicans had come to town from the countryside for blood work, vision and hearing tests, and nutritional tips. In the crowd, a middle-aged mother lamented to the stranger by her side: "I would love to have these old songs to play for my children. When this generation is gone," she said, gesturing to the performer, "so will these tunes too disappear." On August 17-23, 1997, more than 80 performers from every corner of Jamaica journeyed to Kingston to tell their tales and sing the songs of their childhood. Consultant recording technicians from the Florida International Volunteer Corps captured on tape more than 20 hours of folk tales, songs, and readings from the elders. One hour of that wealth of material is offered here as a tribute to the seniors of Jamaica, and a legacy to her youth. |
