Artist History
SONICA is a four piece techno pop band, formed in March 2000. Every new band needs a comparison – so here is mine… Garbage meets Smashing Pumpkins meets Alanis Morissette meets Seal… Sonica is lead by a strong female vocalist, driven by intense high energy guitar, woven around layers of loops, samples, noises, old analogue keyboards and driven by big arena style drums. This band has what it takes to make it big.
HISTORY:
In an earlier incarnation of this project, the band was on the verge of signing a worldwide deal with a U.S. major label. A&R reps were flying up to Vancouver to wine and dine the band. When negotiations got serious the previous singer bowed out citing the long term commitment was too much for her. After a month of soul searching, band leader/producer Ted Hamelin Jr. decided to change the band name and find a new singer. With names from the label, he auditioned girls in San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, eventually jamming with 80+ girls. Of course there were some great singers but it always seemed something was missing. One of these girls, after her audition told Ted about this singer she knew in Edmonton, that in her opinion, would be perfect. Her name was Tamara and she was right! After flying out to Edmonton to jam with Tamara, Ted relocated and together, they put the rest of the band together.
SONICA is:
TAMARA – lead vocals, MURRAY TAYLOR – keys/bass
TODD PRETTY – drums, TED HAMELIN JR. – guitars.
Background information:
Ted Hamelin Jr. hails from Vancouver and is a ten year veteran of the industry. Ted brings a tremendous amount of experience to Sonica. A seasoned producer with a major label background and years of roadwork sharing bills with the likes of Our Lady Peace, Tragically Hip, Tripping Daisy etc; Ted was previously nominated for “PRODUCER OF THE YEAR” up against heavyweights Bruce Fairburn, Bob Rock and Stephen Drake.
Tamara hails from Alberta’s capitol city, Edmonton. From an early age Tamara has been involved in live theatre, performing the lead in Annie at just 9 years old. This lead to more theatre during her teenage years and eventually turned into a theatre studies diploma from Red Deer College. Finding her true calling shortly after college, was singing in a rock band, ( “Coming from a theatre background I knew I had a lot to offer a band”) it seemed like a natural progression to go from theatre to live music. “I had already exorcised all my fears and inhibitions and I felt I had a lot to say”.
Todd Pretty came to Edmonton from Fort McMurray six years ago to attend college. Soon after the move Todd got serious about music. His first band in Edmonton was “Prune”, a progressive metal band, which went on to ink an indie deal and went on to record a full length disc. After five years Todd left Prune to play in different local bands, notably “Amber 416” & “Renslip”. Todd is a great drummer & a strong member of Sonica.
Murray Taylor was born in Australia. Always interested in music, his ability to play so many instruments makes him a tremendous asset to any project. Murray is a graduate of the music program at Grant McEwan College. Murray has played in many notable local bands and is in a race to own as much gear as possible...
