Artist History
Kristen began singing and performing at the age of six, playing the guitar at age nine, and writing lyrics and music at age thirteen. She spent her high school years performing solo and with local jazz and vocal groups around Nashville. At the age of 16, Kristen independently recorded and released her first collection of original music, "Only Words". This album contains 14 songs, including "Brave New World" and "Undiscovered Wonders," which were co-written with Jackie "Jack" White, who has had several number one songs on the country and gospel charts. "Only Words" is currently available at CDbaby.com. Fans can find out more about Kristen's music on the Internet at www.KristenCothron.com and hear her most recent recordings at www.mp3.com/Kristen Leigh Cothron.
Kristen's latest endeavor is an exciting Jazz and Latin inspired three-track demo in collaboration with Nashville musician Andy Behrens. As producer and arranger on this project, Andy contributed from his unique cache of world-music percussion styles and blended them with Kristen's initial singer/songwriter approach. The diversified trio of songs is an intimate, aesthetic experience, filled with haunting melodies and thought provoking lyrics. "The Space" delivers urban jazz beats, sultry vocals and intense lyrics. "Moment in the Moon" follows up with rich vocals backed by an energetic soul/swing groove. "Before You Begin" completes the experience with smooth vocals, layered with international jazz flavor.
Kristen has performed her music locally at venues such as The Franklin Main Street Festival, Borders Books, Jammin’ Java, Bean Central, The Abstract Café, and The Coffee Beanery. She was the featured vocalist for the Tennessee Youth Jazz Orchestra for four years, which performs at venues such as Blair Recital Hall at Vanderbilt University, The Nashville Jazz Institute, The Franklin Main Street Festival, and other local jazz festivals. Kristen has also performed with The Southern Fly-By-Night Singers, an a cappella jazz group performing an interesting blend of roots and rhythm mixed with R&B and jazz favorites. The group has most recently performed at Third and Lindsley, The Sutler Inn and the Columbia Artist's Guild. Kristen received a World Tour Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in the fall of 2002 and is currently on hiatus pursuing her musical career.
Vocally she has been influenced by Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline and Ella Fitzgerald. She admires the writing styles of Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, Sheryl Crow, and Jim Morrison. Although young by measure of years, Kristen emits the soul of a veteran musician through her music, lyrics, and performance.
