The Unknowne are bringing the darkness back into the light...Vos Valley News/New York Arts Correspondent Kelly KerseyThe Unknowne are far from your average Orlando band. They possess the soulful decadence of Peter Murphy, the steely drive of Sisters of Mercy and beyond all else, they're one of a kind.07-31-2000 (Orlando, FL) You may not know who The Unknowne are now, but that will all soon change. Not since the era of Peter Murphy, The Damned and The Cure’s roots, have a relatively unknown, unsigned band displayed such force as the boys of The Unknowne. On their backs, they carry with them forth all of the soul and dark beauty that could cause even the most rigid Gothic fan to take notice. The Unknowne are a bit of a rarity in the growing music scene of Orlando, a city that had gained notoriety in the press as the birthplace of the resurgence of sugary sweet boy bands. “I think that we have our pains just like any other place does. There are people here that like what we’re doing and that’s a blessing, here or anywhere else,” co-founder, James Canfield expressed. They were brought together by James (vocals, guitar and programming) and Jay Canfield (bass guitar) with the help of Rich Stein (keyboards), joined later by David M. (percussion) and Brett Banta (guitar). Like countless bands before them in any given subculture, The Unknowne has had a long road of trial, error and perspiration before finally receiving the recognition they so richly deserve. They don’t have the benefit of the financial backing of a major record label to cut an album, launch large promotional campaigns or land their videos in heavy rotation on MTV. They’ve had to juggle these roles themselves. “A band is not something that should be stamped out like it came off of the assembly line of a factory. Money will never be the key element of great music, just as record-breaking sales do not make a song exceptional. Anything can be sold in mass quantities if it’s pushed hard enough,” James expounded, considering the struggles they’ve endured to create their music. The Unknowne’s album, December, is a rare find as most debut albums go. It’s comprised of ten tracks of solid, ethereal melodies rich with emotion and soul. Blacklace, Devils, Fatal Kiss and Lovelost are stand out selections on the CD. With James’s enigmatic, enchanting vocals and the smooth rifts crafted of silk and black velvet, December is a jewel among the mass-produced sounds that have been flooding the market lately.
