Press Reviews
Colin Helms of CMJ New Music Report writes about CELL 63; "For a band hailing from the sunny, pastel world of south Florida, CELL 63 sounds fairly atypical. The quartet's brand of rock is more akin to the rock coming out of the Midwest than anywhere else, the band's grimy honesty recalling a few Minneapolis outfits in particular('Mats, Soul Asylum, Jayhawks). The singer is a typically husky character whose smoke-and-booze-stained vocals complete the freewheeling guitar rawk that the rest of the band lays out in spades. A harmonica or piano sneaks in on a few tunes, and the band knows just when to unplug for a few forlorn acoustic tales of lost love and self-deprecation. Although 'Once Upo A Drunk...' is only the band's second self-released CD, it reeks of time-honored down-on-your-luck experiences; in the time it takes to travel from one lead title track to the closing 'Last Call', the band has gotten drunk or dumped more than it's requisite number of times to qualify them as true working class rock 'N' roll. |
