Artist History
Vonyse has been on the Los Angeles music scene since the mid nineties and the impression she has made has not been small. "I’m drawn to all types of music," she says, "and what I hear inside my head is a transformation of so many influences." These influ ences include Aretha Franklin, The Staple Singers, Richie Havens, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews, Meshell Ndgeocello and Alanis Morrisette among many others.
Vonyse’s music has been called many things, but altered-native soul, a term Vonyse herself uses to describe her music sums it up best. "I come from a survival place," says Vonyse. "Music has carried me through so many times. I trust it and it guides me." She made her start in her early teens singing with an award winning gospel choir and later made her way to Los Angeles and was asked to join a band called Fiya Bahl. Soon after she formed the group Homemade Gravy who were named by Entertainment Weekly's band search as one of Los Angeles’ top unsigned bands of 1998. Then Vonyse competed on MTV’s "The Cut" hosted by the late Lisa "Left" Eye Lopes.
In the year 2000, Vonyse felt she needed to make a change and left Homemade Gravy, looking to solidify her own voice. Vonyse will soon release her first full-length album "When Sleeping Giants Wake". The album written and produced entirely by Vonyse, showcases her strong and personal lyrics with music that cannot be limited by genres or categories. Music is not a part of Vonyse’s journey, it IS her journey. She says adamantly "I can’t stop making music….I would die."
