Artist History
Set The Controls is a "Band" located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The reason we say "Band" is because at this time it has only one member. His name is Jon Risen.(Jon is currently auditioning musicians to form a 4 piece)
Jon was born August 27th 1974 in Cincinnati. From an early age he had an interest in music and performing. At the age of 5, he received his first guitar, an off brand acoustic with a cracked neck. He made the best of it and learned how to play songs by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones with help from his Father. Citing a strong classic rock influence, he grew up listening to bands such as Boston, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Todd Rundgren/Utopia, Rush, The Who among others. Later in high school Jon was introduced to alternative bands such as Dinosaur Jr, Fugazi, and Soundgarden to name a few. All of which helped to mold his musical style and attitude.
At the age of 12 he received his first "Real" Guitar, an Epiphone SG Spirit. Inspired by guitarist such as David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, and Todd Rundgren, he wanted his guitar to "cry and sing" instead of trying to be the fastest 2 handed tapper which was paramount at the time.
At the age of 22, Jon was ready to try to make music a reality. His friend Jerry bought a 4 track portable studio and asked Jon if he was interested in playing. During the next 3 years Jon and Jerry pushed the equipment past it's means with great results. Seeing that home recording was more conveniant and cheaper than studio time. Jon bought some recording equipment of his own. The result is "Set The Controls."
Recorded in the basement of his house in the summer of 2001, Jon was a one man band, playing all of the intruments and singing. It was a trial and error experience. Who would have thought a minidisc was not immune to drop-outs? That was the point of staying away from tape wasn't it, or getting a great drum sound from 3 Radio Shack microphones in a 12x12 3rd bedroom with no acoustic treatment.
In the Winter of 2002, Jon released 100 4 track promotional samplers of his music locally and nationally. After recieving a positive response to the music, Jon decided to release the full length CD on June 4th to local independent record stores and internet. He is currently searching for a better way to distribute his CD on a national level. On June 13th the first single("Psychic Superior" B/W "Doin' Fine") was featured on WOXY FM's(97.7)"Local Lixx" radio show. Jon is currently sending out the single to college alternative radio stations in hopes they may add the single to their playlist so Set The Controls can reach a wider audience.
Who knows what the future will hold for Set The Controls, but with the help of friends, independent music stores, internet, and radio, it will be interesting!
