    Artist description
Earl Greyhound is earning a reputation as one of the most dynamic, innovative, and impressive rock bands in New York City. The product of an array of influences, Earl Greyhound blends eclectic musical backgrounds and listening tastes, and cranks them to deafening levels. Earl Greyhound is Matt Whyte on guitar and vocals, Kamara Thomas on bass and vocals, and Dan Onori on drums. Matt Whyte, the band’s guitar player, singer, and songwriter grew up in Connecticut where he began playing the piano at age seven. The guitar quickly followed and Matt’s music became heavily influenced by the dark and eclectic sounds of Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Nick Drake, Yes, and INXS. Earl Greyhound’s music reflects the variety in Matt’s musical tastes, yet carves out an uncompromisingly unique and personal approach to the craft. Bassist and vocalist Kamara Thomas grew up in Chicago and draws her inspiration from the likes of Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, and Harry Nilsson. The dual sensitivity and intensity of her vocals and songwriting provides a dynamic counterpoint to Whyte’s often frenetic, deafening compositions. The combination of Whyte and Thomas’ talent often recalls the intense foreground vocal of Mick Jagger and the wailing background vocal of Merry Clayton on the Rolling Stones classic Gimmie Shelter.....but way louder. Rounding out the trio is Dan Onori on drums. After almost giving up the search for musicians through the Village Voice classified section, Whyte found Onori through what he decided would be his final ad before giving up finding a drummer altogether. Born in Pennsylvania and raised on drumming greats like Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, and Max Weinberg, Onori moved to New York after college in search of a normal career....but didn’t find one that lasted. Discontent and laid off after the World Trade Center attacks, Onori searched for and found music again. His style reflects his primary influences, yet lends a subconscious nod to modern drumming greats like Dave Grohl and Stephen Perkins. Earl Greyhound regularly performs to capacity crowds in venues throughout New York including Arlene Grocery, The Living Room and The Mercury Lounge. They are currently recording a debut EP, as of yet untitled and working on new material.
