There are a lot of great bands in the local Baltimore-Washington-Annapolis area, and one of the finest is a little combo called Fools & Horses. Now - I'll be honest - what drew me in to this group was the name. Plain and simple. Totally original. I loved it as soon as I heard it.
But then I played their new CD, "Saturday Morning," and I found a strong group of musicians, top notch lyrics and something that's missing from a lot of groups, including the big names: soul.
These guys have more grit and soul than half the bands selling millions of records today.
Fools & Horses is made up of lead vocalist and songwriter Matt Hutchison, guitarist Kent Warren, Bill Dixon on keyboards and Tim Hutchison on drums and percussion. This is a young band (they call themselves "college-aged") but these guys really know what they're doing.
"Lucy" is the lead off cut and an outstanding piece of music from start to finish. A wonderful combination of Matt's impassioned vocals with Bill's soaring keyboards and a strong backbeat. This is a fan favorite at the band's concerts and it's easy to see why.
"Alright" keeps the energy level cranked way high with great guitar riffs and a bouncy, singalong chorus. This one sounds great at 2 in the morning, in the car with the windows rolled down. A great summertime song.
"The Reprise" is a ferocious, driving song about a relationship that nears its end; the guy figures out he probably didn't need the girl anyway, and she'll probably end up not liking him either. Extremely well written, very witty lyrics make this a standout cut.
I really love Matt's sort of skewed approach to songwriting. "Spinning Me Around" contains one of the best lines I've heard in a long time. "So you're taking me downtown/That's where we go when we're downtown." I just love that, I don't know why. It's just fun. This is another great song with great guitars. You can't go wrong with that combo.
But best of all is the hidden track, "Roll." This is an intimate, acoustic performance where Matt really shows off his vocals. It's short, but magnificent, and worth the price of the CD.
This is the way music - be it rock-n-roll, country, R&B, whatever - should be played: with a deep passion and an intensity that can only be achieved by those that truly love their music.
Buy a copy of Fools & Horses' "Saturday Morning," and you'll discover a band teetering on the edge of stardom. (The website address is foolsandhorses.net.) It only takes that one little break, and this CD could easily be that break. Bravo!
