Artist History
It all started on a cool, clear North Texas day. J.R. Byrd (Vocalist/Bassist) and Alejandro Florez (Guitarist) talked about getting together to jam on some popular music. This was an excursion for them since they are both jazz majors at The University of North Texas (UNT). J.R. set out to find a drummer to complete a small rock trio, and he found his man in one Jake Vaught. Jake, also into jazz, seemed to be the perfect addition to something that would need to be molded into an expensive sounding unit. It just so happened that Alejandro’s fiance, Jennifer Galbreath, was a fine singer that could also play some keys for the cause. The first practice consisted of guitar, keys, bass, drums and a vocal, but the sound was not completed until, the much sought after, Kory Washburn was added to the band. Kory contributed with extensive guitar chops and a great feel for the music. So onward and upward, in a dusty attic, Stella’s melting pot of ideas formed a very clean sound. Everyone in the band is pursuing a very lucrative UNT bachelor’s degree in music, except Jenny who recently finished her Masters in music and is now passing her knowledge onto the next generation of musicians. Stella has an extremely wide range of musical influences that range from Coldplay to Stan Getz. J.R. Byrd has a fancy for music with horns such as early Chicago and Steely Dan. This is because, even though J.R. plays bass and sings in the band, he is a saxophone player first and foremost. J.R. lends his ears toward bass players such as John Entwistle (The Who) and Robert Deleo (STP). Kory Washburn sinks his roots into bands like Pink Floyd and Rush, but also digs on the funkiness of Harry Connick Jr.’s “Star Turtle” and “She”. Kory hammers the audience with wah-wah tactics straight out of Hendrix’s Casket. U2’s “The Edge” also influences him. Like Kory, Jennifer Galbreath’s skills go way beyond playing her instruments. She coerces the Stella following to listen to her enchanting vocals. Jennifer’s bossa nova roots, including anything with Carlos Jobim or Joao Gilberto, add a different flavor to the band. Her personality lends itself to playing shows full of communication with the audience. Alejandro Florez, a native of Colombia, honors his Metallica grunge with a Pat Metheny-esque sophistication. Alejandro is the current 2 o’ clock guitarist at UNT. His vast knowledge of melodic guitar lines that stick in the heads of many, make him a valuable commodity. Last, but certainly not least is Jake Vaught and his classic sounding tubs. Jake packs a punch that puts him up there with drummers he idolizes like Jack Irons (Pearl Jam) and Phil Selway (Radiohead). Stella’s collage of musical styles, background and talent will fill the hole in anyone’s heart. Stella lives for the music. |
