Press Reviews
Burnt Offering is a local metalcore band located in South Central Pennsylvania and I was extremely impressed with this band?s first demo entitled ?Broadcast for the Undead.? With that title alone, it can?t possibly be bad.
The cd contains 5 tracks: an intro, 3 songs, and an outro. For some reason though, my cd that I received has 10 tracks with tracks 1-5 blank, so I don?t know what the hell is up with that. Chad probably had something to do with it, so I?ll just leave it at that. Haha.
The cd opens up with the sounds of radio stations changing similar to what was done on Nailbomb?s album ?Point Blank? but hell of a lot cooler. All of a sudden you hear a deep growl and some eerie horror sounds in the background that is suppose to be a zombie taking over the radio station. It sounds awesome and is a forewarning of the death and utter destruction that is coming on the tracks that follow. Warning: People with heart trouble and/or experience epileptic seizures do not go to the next track or be prepared to go deep into the dark trenches of hell.
The first song of the CD is entitled ?Severed Tongue of the Damned,? a song title that only could have been created by Chad. This song is my least favorite of the three songs on the album but still rocks my socks off. The song opens up with a Disembodied type riff that makes you want to put someone?s head on the curb and stomp repeatedly until the song is over. The vocals or should I say satanic growls fit the song nicely even though they should have been recorded a little louder, but for the limited time spent in the studio it came out well. This song is full of hardcore wind milling with some straight out metal madness that would force any bystander to get in the pit and cause some havoc on the dance floor. The vocals remind me a lot of 18 visions with a little Undying and Unearth styles mixed in. The guitars in this song sound brutal as fuck with extra bone shaking distortion that I love to hear in the metalcore style. I also felt that the drums could have been recorded a little louder to make the breakdowns sound really intense like the live shows and practices that I?ve been too. All in all this song is great, but does not compare to the live sound you would hear at one of their shows. But at least you can blare the CD in your vehicle and start ?chopping wood? in the driver seat like I find myself doing numerous times.
The next track, ?In the Darkness,? is one of my favorite songs that Burnt Offering does. In this track you can actually make out what Chad is saying in the one chorus. You?ll know I?ll be up front singing along at this part. The song starts out without any hesitation straight into what would appear to be someone being massacred with a combination of tight and nightmarish riffs and untranslatable vocals that you couldn?t decipher if he was reciting a vegan cooking recipe or trying to awaken the undead. Either way you wouldn?t want to be alone and hear this demonic undertone coming out of a dark alleyway.
The lyrics are really deep and can be interpreted in many ways. Take heed this total package is more than skin deep, full of hardcoresque type messages that separates it from the typical and mundane ?I want to kill you and eat your guts? type death metal. You could compare these lyrics to this song to any ?emo? band except you wouldn?t hear the brutal double kick and thrashing guitars accompanying them. The breakdown at the end is beyond what I could write on paper. You have to express this breakdown through body motions and not through speech. A pile of bodies lying severely beaten on the ground afterwards can describe this better than what I can. There is a pause when you think that the song / breakdown is over that accounts for just enough time to wipe the blood off your face and then it hits you again with the same breakdown but with a more brutal and chaotic pitch to it that will definitely put fear into those who pass by.
The last song puts Burnt Offering into a league of their own with the very emotional yet psychotic lyrics like, ?I cry? bleeding intestines trail like a bloodied rope . . .? In the beginning of the song, Chad overdubs his chanting with a vicious ear wrenching satanic growl that encompasses all the evil that is Burnt Offering. The drums resemble the drums used in the medieval days by Viking ramming ships when they want the boat to go into ?ramming speed? to destroy their enemies. The steady hypnotizing and ever increasing sound would strike fear into the approaching enemy whenever they would hear it coming closer and closer bringing certain death to them. The drumbeat is so fast, furious, and catchy that it will invoke the listener to start banging on shit such as random tables and walls or on the person?s skull that is next to you.
This song, ?Screaming and Coughing up Blood,? is also full of hardcore dancing parts that make me want to swing my arms around as fast as possible. The guitars bring the full force of evil and destruction with the deep metallic thrashing pouring from the amplifiers straight to the dark crevices of your ear drum enticing spastic convulsions throughout the body. You can?t help but wonder if the guitars are weapons of mass destruction set to go off any time bringing upon the apocalypse. The incredible breakdown at the end is heart stopping. The vocals are overdubbed and remind me of the style used by the lead singing in the awesome European metalcore band Aftershock that now has three of its members in the band Killswitch Engage. This breakdown played live will have the people talking for sure. Make sure you have the proper footwear during this breakdown so you can sprint as fast as you can away from the Murdercore Dance Crew tearing it up all across the dance floor. Enough said.
The outro speaks for itself. You?ll have to pay the measly $4 to hear it for yourself. Overall this demo blows any other CD I?ve ever heard that has come out of this area. Buy this CD or DIE!!!
