Flat Planet's debut EP, produced by Toronto's Snappy Homefries, is a searing hard rock recording, filled with grinding catchy hooks. From the life-changing menacing groove "Bloodshot Eyes" to the slower, more contemplative "Follow," the four-piece Toronto-based band is able to deliver straight-up radio-ready rock, but also offers twists along the way, like the a cappella harmonies that kick off "Drown" and a slamming version of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell." "We like to think we're pretty commercial," says drummer and co-founder Paul Corscadden. "But we're not going to be whores. We're still going to write for ourselves" Paul and frontman Chris Calderbank have been friends, writing partners, and bandmates for well over a decade, meeting at a party when they were still underage. "I think we really understand each other," says Paul. "I was already in a band and the guitar player that we had could not get this really weird accent on a song. Being a drummer, I had pulled the song a little out of time. Chris sat down, I'd only met him once before, and he nailed it." Chris has his own thoughts on why they've remained together all these years, through three different band incarnations."I'm a sucker for punishment," he jokes, before adding, "He's very driven. His aggressive and motivated personality comes out in his playing as well and it fits our style." Touring the country and releasing a couple of independent albums the other bands (one of which topped HMV's indie chart), the pair decided to re-launch with a more aggressive sound after they lost their rhythm section. Writing together, as they always had, they then invited guitarist Steve Grimes, who had played with them seven years ago, to join the band. "He brought in a different approach," says Paul. "He's a heavier player." Next, they posted an ad on a local "seeking musicians" web site and started fielding calls from bass players, weeding out the ones who just wanted to strike it rich. They told all the candidates to go to their web site -- www.flat-planet.net -- download the songs, learn them if they liked them, and show up to audition. While the search for a permanent bass player remains, Dana Perry joined long enough to record on the songs for the EP. Within a week, the newly christened Flat Planet was recording at Toronto's Electric Machine Studios, owned by former Slik Toxik frontman Nicholas Walsh. Chris and Paul had written plenty of material, but in Steve they also acquired a new songwriter. He contributed two almost-finished songs, "Bloodshot Eyes" and "Drown," bringing in riffs for both the verses and choruses. Chris added lyrics. "Bloodshot Eyes," he describes as "a story about somebody who is being greedy with somebody's affection. Just because they see the world in a rosier way, someone's who is so negative they have to bleed someone positive." "Drown" is "an apology for somebody who is successful, somebody who doesn't want to let you down, but has to." The country-style a cappella harmonies at the start of "Drown" was Paul's idea. "I don't like being in the studio. I do my drum tracks and I'm off to the strip joint across the street," he says. "But they were starting the mix on it and it was just on the vocal part and I said, 'Wouldn't that sound cool at the beginning of the song?'" As for "Rebel Yell," just like Alien Ant Farm and Uncle Kracker, Flat Planet is considering releasing the classic Billy Idol song as a single. In the past, Paul and Chris have always tossed '80s hits into its mix, from Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" to Duran Duran's "Hungry Like The Wolf" - all reworked with a twin-guitar bite. "The reason that we did 'Rebel Yell,'" says Paul, "is that we met Steve Stevens (Billy's guitarist). When we went to see him at Kool Haus and we were floored. Steve wants to hear our version of 'Rebel Yell' now." Armed with the new name, new line-up, new songs and renewed determination, Flat Planet has already started playing live, getting excellent reviews and crowd reaction. New incarnation "I definitely feel more positive now than ever," says Chris. "Everyone's in the same headspace."
