Artist description
The first international band on the Golly Gee Records label, Estrume'n'tal is a metal-surf-punk-instrumental band from Brazil with such diverse influences as The Ventures, Ramones, Dick Dale, Stooges, Man or Astro-Man? and traditional Brazilian hillbilly guitar, black music and Brazilian 60's musical vanguard movements. The sound is 'thick and intense', as Phil Dirt says, and the live performances are even more raw and powerful. Who would imagine Brazil would produce a surf music band so many light-years ahead of traditional surf. |

Artist History
[THE ORIGINS] Some years ago, during rehearsals of the Meldas (the legendary Belo Horizonte, Brazil, punk rock band, whose name translates something like ‘The Shids’), while the vocalists would go and have fun and a few drinks at some nearby bar, the instrument players would stay in the studio and play some music. From these sessions came the idea of putting together a new band to play only “Melda music” with no vocals – a kind of sound that soon came to be known as “estrume” (manure). In the first semester of ’97, the band was thinking of scheduling their first concerts when they were presented with the opportunity to play in the inaugural show of the now famous local nightclub A OBRA. The guys recorded a cassette tape with some surf music hits, practiced at home, did a few rehearsals and there it was. On June 27, 1997, Estrume’n’tal played for the first time, in a completely crowded venue, making everybody dance to the sound of good old rock’n’roll.
[AND THEN…] After this first and successful concert, Estrume’n’tal could not stop. The band had a series of concerts, at A Obra and other local venues. In November 1998 Estrume’n’tal played alongside with Man… Or Astro-Man? In Belo Horizonte, for another crowded house. In 1999 the band performed at the 1st Psycho Attack Over BH festival, with other surf-rockabilly-psychobilly Brazilian bands such as Os Catalepticos, Limbonautas, etc. In November 2000 the band took part in the 1st. Minas Gerais State Surf Music Tournament, in Belo Horizonte, and in April 2001 Estrume’n’tal was invited to play in Curitiba, Paran State, along with their sister band, Juremas, in the HellSurf festival. In 2002 the band played again in the Minas Gerais State Surf Music Tournament. And in many other occasions Estrume’n’tal has played with darn good Brazilian bands such as Xevi 50, Tri-Dux, thesurfmotherfuckers, Gasolines, Maremotos, Autoramas, Baratas Tontas, Reverb All Stars, etc. |

Press Reviews
"Link Wray grinds tires for a new highway. The watchword for this CD is "intensity." Most tracks are melodic and sport unrelenting power. It's almost more than you can stand in one sitting. Solid is an understatement, with very strong musicianship and near insanely thick sound. Brazilian surf is light years from trad." Phil Dirt, Reverb Central, KFJC
