Artist History
Wow. Where to start, um…how about here. Ok, now that that has been decided, let’s move on. ‘Twas junior high when we started liking this music called punk. We=Wodies, anthony had not yet come along. I was our 9th grade year that we decided that we should try to play ska. After all, chris lee had a drumset in his house(his brother’s), me(kelly) played the saxophone, adrian played the trumpet, and our friend chip played the guitar. Needless to say, once we got together at chris lee’s house, we found out that you actually have to be able to play a song to make things fun. So we got together once or twice but never really actually played what one might call a song. So, high school. Oh, wonderful high school. Carlos was the first of us to have a car, and a license to boot. This opened worlds of opportunity, or perhaps just cross-town. One day while eating lunch in the cafeteria as sophomores, we wrote words to a song with our senior wodie friends. Now, these were still the days when we made fun of adrian and his asiananity. Day in the Park. That’s what we called it. Our first song. Nothing to do with a day in the park. That was the subject. It was actually about an asian girl(none in particular, just an imaginitive one as we will so say). Like I said Carlos had a car. I had my brothers bass guitar and amp, and chris roland had his guitar amp and my brother’s guitar. This was it. We were ready. So, we drive. And then we think, huh, I wonder if we’ll need a drumset. That’s right, we didn’t have a drumset. We had what kinda was a “drumset.” Carlos’ infamous blue boxes. Oh yes, they are still loved by millions. Anyway, we figure this would do, after having driven around town actually expecting at the time to find a drumset we could use. Yeah, like I said: high school. Anyway, we write and play “Day in the Park.” We also played “inspector Gadget.” I still have the recordings from this one day we played. The only day, I believe, that “Day in the Park” has ever been played. So, things kinda dissolve. And then, chris and carlos decide to play with chris lee. This starts the band: 31 flavers. www.mp3.com/31flavers Chris lee drums. Chris roland on the guitar. And Carlos delightfully played the bass and sang(*cough* like mike herrera *cough*) Oh yes these days were wonderful. Ukraine girl, (the unreleased) home alone, gotta get away, these were all products of the magical days we call sophomore year. This band (somewhere about here the name changed to: Ultra 52)then decides to (after several switches on who plays what and who sing) play a song with mike lee(chris lee’s older brother, he had been in 39 forever www.mp3.com/Sobstory (awesome song, check it out, we were all stoked in 10th grade when we first heard it)). They write a song that they premier at matt’s 17th birthday. Ultra 52/ 31 flavers Lineup: fatchris-guitar, lilchris-bass, mike-drums, and carlos-drums. This was just a sign of the good things to come. I also have this video tape still if someone would like to view it. I loved it. It was tons of fun. They stinkin covered “puff the magic dragon.” I mean, how much more magic and dragonation could you want? These days lead to mike being an actual member of the band. Carlos is then kicked out of the band. This was a crazy idea, but he got thru it alive. The songs are practiced and more are written with the now 3 person lineup. The band practices on a fairly often basis. They then decide to add a vocalist in justin lorah. Justin brings a whole new aspect to the table. He help write one of their best, and one of my personal favorite songs of theirs, “in my mind.” This is an awesome song, I love the stuff their doing. They rework all their songs with justin at the healm. It’s a pretty crazy situation but it’s cool. Mike helps to write a more of a hardcore song and another song (“in a moment” and “12 hour flight”). Their songs continue to get better and better. It is during late May, after we have finished what was then our junior year in high school that they get a show at the local hastings in altus. They played with their friends in the band lameboy. This was a really cool show, and many kids from school came to see them. I didn’t go to go, much to my dismay, due to attending oklahoma boys state. I have seen the video, and it was awesome. Fun stuff. Anyway, they decide to let go of justin and with all the jobs and hassles that the summer brings, they decide to take it easy. They still play occasionally, and eventually add carlos to the mix. For the record, it was at this point that the line up was: chris ro-guitar, chris lee-bass, carlos-drums, and mike-vocals. Mike learned to scream. This was/is cool. They change their name to autumn kills and begin to write more hardcore-type-melodic music. They recorded “wasted breath” which can be heard on www.mp3.com/31flavers. This is one of their best songs yet and sends them in a new and promising direction, until, mike ends up having to move away. This is not cool, so they pretty much end it there. It was fun while it lasted, but not much was going on then. This was fall 2002. Me and chris then during a break during school decide to play my mom’s acoustic at my house. We come up with music for a song, and I write some words for it, and then chris finishes them. We have a song. We want to see what it sounds like electric. We ask carlos to drum for us. We play at chris ro’s house. And it ends up that we really like how it sounds. This song was someday, the time was fall/winter 2002. We don’t play too often, but every once and a while, and everytime for the first few rehearsals we wrote a new song. We liked the way they sounded, and we liked playing. This has brought us to where we our today. We have 9/10 originals and have covered 2/possibly soon to be 3 old songs from the other bands. We recorded in spring/early summer 2002 with jonathon hepner at his house, and again in june with paul shields in hobart, OK, and made 100 copies of the later recordings cd. We sold/gave away the 100 copies by mid-august. You can hear the songs from that cd on mp3.com or email one of us and we’ll send you a burnt copy. As far as shows, our first was at carlos’ graduation party in may, our 2nd was at carl’s jr. in altus during the first week of august, the following Monday we played at the highschool band room for them (our 3rd show), a week and one-half later, we played a show in wichita falls with meager portions and last in line. Hopefully we can keep playing, and come to your town soon. Thanks, kelly |
