Artist History Downstream´s history can be traced back at the end of summer 2000, when Joni, Matti and Markus met Jesse Uunila at a rock-festival. The three young men from the town of Joensuu in eastern Finland had been playing together for some time, but had never had a serious band project. After a few inspiring discussions with Jesse, it was decided that they would form a metal band. Jesse´s friend Tommi Penttinen, a talented musical genious, came along to play guitar, and so the first line-up was completed. In the following autumn and winter new songs were written and rehearsed, but there was one small problem; a proper vocalist couldn´t be found anywhere. Finally, in early spring 2001 eve-ryone was beginning to get frustraded and so the ultimate choice was made, when Joni and Matti decided to ask their friend Laura Vuorjoki to visit the rehearsals and see if she was interested. Laura was imperessed by the music, and so decided to join in. Female vocals hadn´t originally been thought of, but now that Laura was in the band, she convinced everyone with her strong and beautiful voice. After the first glorious gig in a small club in Joensuu it was decided that a demo should be made. Downstream entered the studio in june 2001 and the four-song debut demo `Starbound´ was recorded. The result was quite unsatisfying in everyone`s opinion , as the production and playing weren`t at very high level. The demo was released anyway, and did after all receive some positive feedback. The following year brought along some line-up changes. Tommi had to move to another town, and was no longer able to continue with the others. Everyone was shocked and depressed due to this, but there was no other choice but to find a replacement for Tommi. After a short search Laura announced that she had heard great rumours of a guitar legend from Rääkkylä, and had managed to get her hands on the the phone number of this living miracle. So, Arto Toropainen was asked to visit the rehearsals and after short consideration he deciced to join the band. Arto`s talents with guitar were no less than the others had heard, and so Arto soon received the sincere acceptance and respect of the others. After few gigs the band felt they would be ready to record their second demo. This time the studio was chosen carefully, and so the band entered Mediaworks-studios in june 2002. Now the production was better, sounds heavier, playing more accurate and the songs had evolded. The four-piece demo `Lost´ was released, and received positive feedback from various sources. At the moment the band is getting ready to start rehearsing actively again since Arto`s service in the Finnish military will end in the beginning of january 2003. During Arto`s service some new material has been created and it will be completed as soon as Arto will be able to participate re-hearsals again. Hopefully the summer 2003 will offer the band lots of opportunities to do live shows and perhaps even a new demo will be made by the end of the year.
