    Artist History
Ill Groove Movement eludes easy classification. Some call the eclectic sound organic hip-hop with intellectual rhymes and no turntables required. A three-part rhythm section comprised of drums, bass, and guitar, provide the hooks that accompany the fresh flows from a talented tandem of emcees: The Professor & The Catalyst. The vibe is one part funk, one part jazz, a dash of rock, and a hint of pop sensibility: rolled up and burned down to make you move; to make you funkā€”to make your head bob and your mind throb with infectious rhymes and rhythms. Ill Groove hails from the Marquette University campus in downtown Milwaukee. There the group came about in early 2002 after the Professor unleashed a funky freestyle over an acoustic jazz hook that guitarist Adam Lovinus had written. Highly impressed, Lovinus asked bassist Davin Hanson to add the low-end. Together, with their Dr. 770 drum machine holding down the beat, the trio played a weekly gig on The Catalysts radio show, with the host adding his own rhymes to the grooves and eventually joining forces with the project. Drummer Mark (Barney) Zoller hooked up with Ill Groove Movement in an impromptu jam session at a campus house party, after the Dr. 770 broke minutes before show time. Despite the cheap and incomplete drum set, Zoller had no trouble finding the groove while adding an injection of pure funk to the sound. So goes the birth of Ill Groove Movement. The group has played the campus circuit of house parties and school-sponsored events, as well as rocking bars and clubs, including The Riverwest Commons (where the group advanced to the semi-finals in a city-wide battle of the bands), Vnuks Lounge, and The Rave. The band is currently recording their first LP The ILLiad, due out this summer.
