GALACTUS 77 - Demo 2002 (Independent)
Pleasantly surprised by this East Coast Canuck quartet’s demo, Galactus 77 are an energetic, no-holds-barred kind of stoner rock/doom act that likes to play it loud and fierce. With shades of Orange Goblin, Black Sabbath and EYEHATEGOD in their music, the band dishes out the dirty goods with a Cheshire cat smile, providing us with addictive riffs and grooves that are as dangerous as they are a rush to take in. Opener "Barbed Wire Halo" sets the seven-song demo into motion and from there the band steers this rockin’ machine with one hand on the wheel and the other clutching a beer. In other words, this is reckless and out of control for the most part. As well, interesting numbers like "Seventy Seven" and "Locust Noose" do a damn fine job of making our ears bleed through their pummeling fuzz/distortion. There are some great bands out east—solid acts like Iron Giant and sHeavy—and you can now add Galactus 77 to that list too.[A. Bromley]-7-

Reviews Galactus 77 - Demo 2002 (Self-release)
by Chris Barnes
Not only is it really good, but it's really, REALLY
good. It's really not a knock-off of anything as I
have come to expect these days - If I had to narrow
it down, it's more of an amalgamation of Beaten Back
to Pure, Orange Goblin and maybe a bit of Dozer/Lowrider.
The guitar and bass sound is complete tube-amp-played
-through-a-mud-pool-on-volume-10 with bits of stoned-vibe
leads on top. You'd expect to hear a carnival of sludge
with this tone, but the band keeps things mostly
uptempo, except for some of the breakdowns which
grind gears going from 5th to 1st and then back again.
Hell, "Cylon Rising" is almost punk rock! Speaking
of breakdowns, Galactus 77 create some of the best
breakdowns this side of Las Cruces and Gate9. The
tempo change and the resulting garden of groove in
"Solarnaut" is a keeper to be sure. Anyway, I think
Galactus 77 has what it takes to get signed with a
decent label and make a dent in the underground. I
can't remember the last time I said that about a
demo... except maybe for Semlah's demo...but I
know it doesn't happen very often. Let's keep our
fingers crossed for the Cretins of Canada.

Galactus 77 - Demo 2002
Reviewed by: Deanna St.Croix
Just before I was doing this review I was thinking that I needed to broaden my musical horizons a little to include some death/thrash/speed….’whatever’ music. You know….the kind that has so many influences that it’s hard to figure out where it fits. And along came Galactus 77.
Not quite death, not quite thrash, not quite stoner, not quite pure heavy metal, this band defies description but the one thing I really did know was that this is some mighty cool stuff. The vocals are deep, growling – almost death-like but not indecipherable. Let me clarify and say that Dan’s vocals, while not of the Death style, are pretty close to being there. Darkly enticing, meaner than a Doberman with a bone, these are vocals that scream (and not for attention). A little closer to the mic and wham! That’s all it would take, a muffled dose of death. The music itself is more a cross between doom (old style) and heavy metal and/or stoner on speed.. But hey, I could be getting my genres all mixed up for all I know.
The interesting thing is that, amongst these deep drowning vocals is this southern twang thing, and considering this band is Canadian, pretty amazing. There is a familiar ring to the music, but one I can’t quite put my finger on. ‘Seventy Seven’ is by far the best track on the album IMO and a real standout at that. This album begs for high voltage, it also begs for earplugs if ever seen live. I can visualize the head banging metal heads that will be digging, or already dig, Galactus 77. This album will appeal to those who like their music with a heavy dose of metal, a good dose of high powered and lightening fast drumming, and the deep vocals that characterize bands like Pantera or Testament. I truly have no idea what he is singing about and that is okay because the music is powerfully aggressive and extremely in your face. Not for the weak, Galactus 77 blows you away with their own brand of…..well…..I have no idea really – just heavy as hell music. I would recommend this to anyone with a taste for the heavier side of things. Seriously, buckle down your seatbelts because you are about to get blown away.
