Artist History
Blue Tail Fly spontaneously generated from the garbage heap of the Dallas, Texas music scene in 1997. Three musical maggots - Detroit native Randy Cook, Dallas native Twitch, and Swipesy (who vaguely remembers being tossed out of hell for not paying his bar tab) on guitar and vox - who were sick of chasing the prevalent not-so-current trends of Dallas, violently threw together what's been called "evil bastard industrial ZZ Top". (Andrew Aguirre, of Wildwoods fame described it as "Ministry covered in unrefined Texas crude oil") Fueled by alcohol, cigs and herbal enhancements, BTF hit the drag strip. The first cd, "The Devil Take the Blue Tail Fly" was released, and a slam bang Halloween show at the DFW Music Exchange kicked off the first tour. The maggots sprouted wings. And were swatted back to Dallas, broke, the next spring! 1998 found Randy and Swipesy musically prostituting themselves for cash, while Twitch disappeared on his BMW for a time. While working on his solo project, Swipesy blew a big head gasket upstairs and had to go in for an overhaul. His drooling mouth organ got shipped up north, where he had a nice padded vacation on the shores of Lake Huron. Eventually, Swipesy finished his two solo Lo-Fi CDs, "Going Down North" and "Wish I was Here". 1999 brought about the Michigan version of Blue Tail Fly, with Port Huron native Dee Zastah on drums, and the release of the second BTF cd "Rocket Fuel For The Earthbound" The cd was quite a departure from the Industro-Southern rock sound of the first cd, but still held contained enough elements of metallic weirdness to qualify as a underground favorite. Unfortunately the boom-cha-boom of Detroit's rap metal scene drowned out the cries of the Fly. 2000 saw the release of the third BTF cd "Shovel Fulla Knuckles", with the same line up (and again independently produced) which turned out even angrier than the predecessor. The track "Bitter" more or less became the battle cry of the Blue Tail Fly. A crappy deal with an even crappier indie label resulted in the shelving of the fourth cd in 2001, returning Twitch to Dallas and turning Zastah loose on the world beat again. After the 9/11 attacks, Swipesy recorded a whole new fourth cd by his terminally pissed off self, entitled "Bloodstains", which is currently available through the website. 2002 finds Blue Tail Fly as strong as ever, with a 6 track ep on the way, a best of compilation due by December, and a return to the road in January, with Randy Cook returning on drums. Maybe even a shocker or two in the works. Feel free to visit the warped world of Blue Tail Fly on the web, as we promise to issue a warning before swarming into your town. Keep the beer cold, and hide the valuables!! |

Press Reviews
White Trash Devil - 08/21/2002/ Review by Methodical
Whoa boy. Okay, everyone sit down and pay attention, because Blue Tail Fly is a fucking monster. I could be like Lord K and end the review there, but I'll explain. Maybe some of you remember my Tomahawk review of a while back. Tomahawk is an all star band full of potential that produced a big, ugly bag of noise, right? Yeah, your opinion may be different, but that's mine, and I'm sticking with it. I bring up Tomahawk for one reason; everything I expected out of that CD, I got from Blue Tail Fly and more. A whole lot more.
Bloodstains is Blue Tail Fly's third album. Or fourth. You know, I'm really not sure. These fellas have a serious obsession with booze and herbal remedies, so trying to get a straight answer off their website is pretty freakin' difficult. So, let's go with four for now. They are rather hard to describe. Let's see if their own words from their website make sense... "Techno metal southern rock, alternative Goth electroboogie, whatever. Them dogs all hunt." Okay, that works for me, and it's a hell of a lot closer then any words that were coming to mind. I had a serious Beavis and Butthead moment when I first heard this CD. I had it on in my car on the way to work and I vividly remember laughing the whole way to work 'cause all I could think to myself was, "Holy shit dude, this fucking rocks." I got caught headbanging at a stoplight by this old lady. She yelled something at me, probably to turn it down, all the old farts do that to me. That just made me laugh more. I was thinking, "Lady, do you hear this? How could I possibly turn this down?" People just don't understand sometimes.
So, when I got home that night, I did a little research and I found out something pretty amazing about this album. Even though Blue Tail Fly has made albums as a band before, this is done completely by Swipesy, the band's guitar player and singer. That started me down a whole new path of 'holy shits' again. There is just so much good about this CD. It's brutal, for one. The album starts out at a manic pace and just never lets up for the most part. The final track, "Bloodstains," is a complete departure, but still a damn fine song. This guy's riffs are impeccable, but Swipesy is from Texas, so I'd figure that's to be expected. The lyrics are catchy, insightful, entertaining and done in a scary voice that would make ol' Mike Patton green with envy. I'm not sure yet, but I think there are even some horns in there. I think.
I don't know what else to really say about this band. They're awesome. Go to their site and download some of their samples. You can even buy the new CD there. It's worth the time.
