    Artist History
Fonograph is an eclectic-pop band based in Springfield MO, playing string melodies against a combination of percussion instruments ranging from African hand-drums to trap, led by tenor vocals and acoustic guitar. A four member group, Fonograph formed in December of 2001 when four former friends of the rodeo clown circuit got together for a few drinks. After complaining about the lack of serious exploratory music in the pop world and several pitchers of beer, the four decided to form a band and call it The Rodeo Clowns. The next day, when sobriety hit, they quickly changed the name to Fonograph. The group consists of a cellist, bassist (electric and upright), acoustic guitars, various percussion, and tenor vocals.

From: The Southwest Standard May 8, 2002 by Kevin Darr (the grammatical errors have been left in, and most of these quotes are paraphrases except the one about beer) Fonograph to release second CD If you’re not into hip-hop, teen pop or mind-numbing techno, the music world may have little to offer you these days. A new band from Springfield may put a much needed change in your stagnant musical library. The name of the band is Fonograph and it is just starting to make a name for itself. The band released its first CD, The Book of Canada, in April with a celebration at Nathan P. Murphy’s. “I am pleased with how the CD is being accepted,” said Brian Carlstrom, lead singer and guitar player for the band. “It is selling well and the momentum from the release is still up there.” Along with Carlstrom, the band is comprised of three other members: John Quebbeman on upright bass and electric bass; Steve Elliott on drums; and Jenny Vallier on the cello. Carlstrom and Vallier are also SMS students. Fonograph formed in December after Carlstrom’s former band, The Serenity Tribe, broke up and they met Vallier, who filled in because the cello player was leaving the band. “This is nothing I saw coming when I came to college, but I am so glad I met these guys,” Vallier said. “The music is fun and the other members in the band make it worth it.” The sound of the band is a mishmash of pop and rock, but every day it’s sound is leaning more toward a brand of music called “emo.” Carlstrom likes to describe the band’s sound as “eclectic” pop. “Some recent influences on the band are Sigur Ros, Death Cab for Cutie and Bright Eyes,” Carlstrom said. “A major influence is Radiohead, which is what most people think we sound like. I have no problem being associated with them at all. They are such geniuses and I don’t have any problem borrowing certain elements from them.” Along with its monthly gig at the Village Coffee Company in Chesterfield Village, where it plays the first Friday of every month, the band has two nights lined up in Kansas City later this month. The band is playing May 16th at the Cup and Saucer and May 24th at the Westport Coffeehouse, both in Kansas City. Along with the band’s dates in Kansas City, Fonograph is planning to release a second CD later this year. It is the same CD as the first, with a few songs added on. “I hope to start writing new songs soon and get some things down on paper,” Carlstrom said. “I hope to get the CD out by Christmas.” The band members have high hopes for the band after they graduate. “We are seriously thinking about taking our act out to California and getting a shot at the big time,” Vallier said. “I don’t even need to get paid, just playing the music is enough for me.” “I hope we go to California and take a shot,” Carlstrom said. “I’ll play for beer and food, as long as we get to play.” Somehow, this sounds like the making of a true American rock band. (no transcript available) From: Parsons Sun April 25, 2002 by Colleen Surridge Vallier to Share Her Music with Parsons Music has always been a part of Jenny Vallier’s life. On Saturday she’ll make it a part of Parsonians’ lives. Vallier, a cellist with the band fonograph, will play from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday at The Menagerie. Vallier began playing with the local Suzuki Strings at age 5 and joined the school orchestra in sixth grade. She graduated from Parsons High School in 1999. She joined fonograph last year. Besides Vallier, members are bassist John Quebbeman, percussionist Steve Elliott and vocalist and guitarist Brian Carlstrom. Influences for the band include Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Nick Drake, Pedro the Lion, Coldplay and Bright Eyes. “Jenny’s a junior at SMSU in Springfield, and is majoring in communication disorders and audiology,” said her mother, Vickie Madl. “Another cellist graduated last year who was in the band and she was invited to take that cellist’s place. “I’m very excited about her coming here to play. The cello, when she picks it up, it’s her way of de-stressing or energizing.” “I know she’s very excited about coming back and playing in her hometown and she gets to show off locally,” Madl said. “They have been working since Christmas on a new CD. It was released April 19 and they will be bringing copies with them. This is the band’s second CD, but the first Jenny is on.”
